In his younger days,Duran was considered to have been boyishly handsome by a lot of woman,so this particular actor could pull it off.
Yeah, oddly enough it was the old The Joe Louis Story from '45 or '46(?)...they had the wisdom to use only actual Joe Louis fight scenes...and Coley Wallace just played the title role of the Brown Bomber outside the ring. Ironically, Wallace, being a pretty good fighter himself, may have carried the fight scenes well, but the integrity of the film was enhanced by vintage Joe Louis fights. this is the only one i can think of J.G, other than some bio movie that jimmy Stewart played in about some famous baseball player. i just think that most all fight scenes in movies sucked..heads fly back violently at the slightest punch...and all punches seem to land...and with sickening impact, lol..blood gushing like a geyser, like in Raging Bull...maybe the best...one I'll cut a little slack on is The Harder They Fall...there's a scene..in the dressing room where Jersey joe Walcott decks the giant "Primo Carnera" prototype in that film...and Max Baer's fight scene was ok I guess, but it may be I'm a bit biased about that movie, as it's my alltime fave boxing film.
Probably the biggest embarrassment I've ever seen is Anthony Perkins in FEAR STRIKES OUT, mincing around as Jimmy Piersal, one of the fiercest hard-nosed baseball players in history. Truly cringeworthy.
:rofl:rofl...I'm laughing out loud at your description of perkins!!! I'm imagining just how bad that movie was...with Perkins in the lead role..and just a couple of throwaway thoughts (that don't mean a thing, really) Robert DeNiro was great at capturing the essence of Jake LaMotta, but it's a shame that there wasn't film about Joey Giardello...'cause DeNiro sure looked more like Joey than Jake, IMO...and tho' he was a fine actor, Paul Newman sure as hell didn't resemble Graziano at all...which took away at least a tad's worth of the believeability of Somebody Up There Likes Me....
