I don't think anyone thinks Benn avoided Collins at any stage of his career, he never avoided anyone. To say so is just ludicrous. If you know your boxing then you will realise Benn was pretty much done at the top level after McClellan. He just said in that interview it was the finish of him! Colins was a good, tough fighter, but let's not pretend he beat the real Nigel Benn.
Benn was down to fight Collins after Barkley, then Hearns. There was also talk of Benn fighting Collins in Dublin in '93, but Hearn decided to not risk it with Benn-Eubank II money day on the line and bizarrely put Benn in with former cruiserweight Lou Gent, on the strength of Gent's draw with #1 contender Wharton. Collins was rightly bitter. While celebrity Nigel Benn was in Italy preparing to face the very ordinary, highly limited spoiler Mauro Galvano (who would quit on his stool with a cut) for the famous WBC belt in front of 10 million viewers, little-known Collins was in Italy taking on a true master boxer Kalambay over 12 rounds for an EBU title, only televised in Italy, and hard done-by.
Benn didn't avoid Collins. Steve brought no money to the table, like Eubank did. Not until he beat Eubank that is.
So like i said Collins a good fighter, but Benn never avoided him. For the record i love Eubank too, just not like Benn!
For me it was the other way round. Being from Brighton, unsurprisingly I am a big Eubank fan and have grown to respect Benn just as much. Benn/McClellan would have been one of the greatest nights of boxing for me if it hadn't of ended so tragically.
