Now, I don't really care about Mayweather, but it would be a stupid move signing a contract to fight Canelo when you've got Guerrero coming up in a minute on ppv. Everyone would be talking about the Alvarez fight and it would likely hurt sales vs Guerrero.

Considering that its only about 3 realistly acceptable fights that can happen if mayweather fights in sept i think Alvarez/trout winner Alexander/Brook winner 140 tourney winner are all in the mix. Stylistically I think Alvarez plays into Mayweather's hand though Alvarez has the size advantage he's not the quicker fighter, he has a tendency to tire late in fights, and he fights in burst.
While i think you have to be more of a boxer/counter puncher to beat mayweather there not enough evidence due to competition to say Alvarez is a mentally strong enough fighter to get the job done. I think to beat mayweather first you much be able to match his physicality as well as his ring iq, have a strong jab to offset his rhythm and not get discouraged by counters, and the ability to adjust.
I think a big reason mayweather is undefeated besides his skill is that people are gullible enough to keep asking him to fight the same fighter with the same style brawlers who just throw alot of punches. The guys that have had the most success came when trying to out box Mayweather; De La Hoya earlier and Cotto in the middle rounds when they worked off off the jab instead of just trying to muscles him Judah working off counters or Corley. Every fighter with the exception of Castillo that has tried to bully mayweather ended up taking a beating
