Many boxers spend time putting on vanity weight. I've seen pix of JC and he is another one that doesn't do things that don't benefit his boxing.
Hopkins was NOT lifting light weights, i saw him do alot of power cleans, which is an exercise which is difficult and extremely inneffective when doing it with light weights, he was also doing very heavy bench press as you can see in the count down to calzaghe-hopkins, he does 4-5 reps and rests. Also hopkins works with mackie shilstone, the guy is all about heavy weight training and interval running.
Thats why now days boxers hire, strength/conditioning coaches, most of the guys that try train themselves end up putting on too much bulk (briggs example) and mass, guys like miguel cotto and ricky hatton lift pretty heavy and sill are explosive and fast.
I agree its endurance training, the tri ext is putting strength and endurance in his arms, plenty of power comes from the tris in a punch, maybe not as much as your shoulder or hips, its woring for him.
Boxers shud not do too many pulling movements..More pushing..I listen to the oldschool heads in boxing..lifting can help your fast twitch fibers..go to heavy and both your power and speed will drop a lil bit tho
Kind of an odd workout. Kelly outweighs me by about 20 - 30 lbs and I do twice as much on my tricep extensions as he does. The amount of reps he does looks more like a bodybuilder's exercise to me. I would've thought he'd do lesser reps with heavier weights for more of a strength inducing workout.
He does a lot of 'arm' punching I think. If he extends too much, he gets countered. Think of 'controlled'.
