check it out boys. i have shared all of your pain watching the terrible scoring in the amateurs.

    this is much better.

in a nutshell - all judges are recorded independantly. there is no longer the one second window to push - a judge can think about it for a few seconds - also it means that judges can record a multi punch combo - say a left-right- hook combo found its mark with each punch in the past that was likely to record 1 point now it could record 3.

having all the judges recorded means not only will combo punching be more common but so will inside fighting - if you only need one judge to see at any given time fighters can use the corners for pressure fighting too.

of course they can't make it simple and just count all of the judges when it comes to giving the actual score

    - no - they have to have to ways of scoring - the first and one that will be most common i think is called the "similar score method"

here they take the 3 judges who's score is closest to each other and divide the total by 3 to get the score

the other method is called the "trimmed mean" - say judges score 2-4-6-8-10 - they would take away the lowest and the highest and divide by 3

it also means no running score but instead a score comes up during round break.

My biggest frustration watching the amateurs is the lack of scores for body punches.

Have seen guys almost punch holes clear through their opponents and not score a point.

and that is one of the things they'll be focusing on - that and combo punching

How about they use a system of 3 judges scoring a fight based on clean punching, effective aggressiveness, ring generalship & defense?

Seriously though, some thing does have to be done about the amateur scoring, it favours tall, rangy fighters, accountability of the judges is reduced, it doesn't favour in fighting, body shots and hooks, ring craft, dominence and aggression aren't taken into account and too many times I've seen boxers clearly dominating an opponent, hitting at will and staggering their opponent only to lose on points, count back or even having the whistle blown against them.
Time and again I see young fighters get disillusioned by the scoring and loose interest in competing.

But see this is where you're wrong - by individual judge scoring it certainly favours in fighting and hooks, uppercuts the whole thing because instead of needing 3 judges to score you (something that was physically impossible given rings are square) you only need on judge.

in theory its great for infighting (i'll let you know for sure on monday when my infighting middleweight - reigning under 19 state champ - fights)

also aggression is favoured because there is no one second limit on scoring this means if a fighter throws say a six punch flurry in two seconds and four punches hit a judge can push the button four times and record four points - the old systems relied on two other judges seeing the same 4 punches hit and push the button in the same two seconds - what would usually occur is one point.

this is well on the way to being a better system

Under the existing system there's always been the problem of angles and obstructions to the view of the scorers.

Pretty hard for 3 or 4 judges to have a clear unobstructed view of any given event that occurs.

The new system is a step in the right direction and well overdue.

I like the way AIBA highlight the flaws in the previous system yet persisted with it and defended it for so long.

This is a great move in my opinion. The scoring system they currentlly use is a joke.

Id like them to go a step furthur and actually tallie up each Judges scores. Then have the winner declared from there scores. Much like the Pro's. It would simplfy the whole thing, and hold each judge accountable.

What are you talking about, the current system requires three of the appointed judges to see a technique land, then press the button correlating to the corner that landed the punch within a second of at least two other judges for a point to be awarded, please correct me if I'm mistaken but I believe that is the current Olympic scoring system currently adopted by the AABA.

this is why we have three amatuer associations in oz, there was nothing wrong with the original scoring system, but as usual, politics and $$$ stuff things up,fairest and only system is to have unbiased judges and good luck with that

I know of the A.A.B.L, other wise known as 'The League' with a similar scoring system profesional boxing, with three judges and a 20 must scoring system, and the A.A.B.A, otherwise known as 'The Association' with the Olympic scoring system of four judges and points for individual punches.

I'm not aware of a third amateur organization.

Global Amateur Boxing, most prevelant in QLD.

I think they need to fark off the judges tbh. Especially if they are going to contuine with the points system. There is to much corruption even at the amateur level, they have the technology and mearly need to spend the money in order for it to become proficient. Sensors can be placed on the headguard and a computer program that favours no boxer can tally the points, an administrator would need to oversee the program and have admin rights to use tools that would deduct a point for example and be recorded and reasons given as to why, this is important for point deductions.

For body shots imo they need to test this area a bit more, placing sensors in headguards is easy but may not be so eays with singlets. Velcro or something similar would need to be put into the singlet or they wear a custom designed competition senor singlet that has them already built in.

If they want to get it right, spend the money because the technology is there to make the sport 110% accurate in terms of the amateurs and the point system. As for other organisations, none of them other than the ABA can take anyone on a path to commonwealth or Olympic level in terms of participation as Global, League are not eligiable for Commonwealth or Olympic selection and if any such trails existed in which Global and League fighters could compete against ABA the global & league guys would have to knock out the ABA guys in order to win a fight, ABA officals are VERY bias towards Global & League fighters and these guys would be the judges, thus if any merger is to take place or any middle ground a computer system will need to be in place that farks off the judges, otherwise they would need 1 Global, 1 League and 1 ABA offical, each of course wanting their commision which would sky rocket the costs for promoters to put on amateur shows, it just wouldnt happen.

IMHO this is the best hope for amateur boxers below...
