So I really want to learn how to box. I've looked around the forum and everyone says to join a boxing gym. Makes sense, but I am not sure entirely how a boxing gym works. I've wrestled and do judo and with those everyone tends to do the same thing together. It seems like boxing is a more individual thing. Do you have to pay trainers on top of the gym dues to learn something or does the head coach/trainer make the rounds and gives a few pointers to everyone. Also any recommendations for a gym in Seattle. I know of South Park, Bumblebees and Cappy's. Anyone here ever train at any of these gyms?
i did martial arts and made the switch to boxing, had ALL the exact same questions u have.... first off, yeah if u wanna great proper technique and knowledge, theres only so much ur gonna get from books/online/dvd's, etc. id consider those secondary to a trainer. at the two gyms ive been a part of, there are group training sessions and times that certain weight classes get together during the week to spar and train together. ull pick up some stuff from guys jsut around the gym, and people are usually pretty cool about it... but u need to get one on one training to really get going and get some foundation and that usually costs extra in addition to ur monthly dues. they will have trainers available. but after a while (shouldnt take more than a month or two) ull be able to put together ur own workout. but training and learning technique never really stops. u gotta constantly be keeping ur punches, footwork, movement etc proper.
depends on where you go. some places in england (ABA Am gyms) are quite vague, you get taught a bit of footwork and stance, do some bags and then start sparring after a few weeks. other places, you get taught in detail. but its really a cost-dependent question. if you can, splash out a bit extra and go to a decent, non-overcrowded gym.
any gym I have been in was very structured. What I mean is, warm up, run, skip, bag, pads, spar. Ya know. Plus you make friends so you do alot with them and you learn alot off eachother! you normally pay the coach once a week and thats it.
yeah i go to a structured gym too but my gym is free and it is world class Petronellis in brockton Marvin haglers gym ive already got to watch ex pros pros and some really good amatures, took pointers from ridick bowe robby sims haglers sparrin partner, kevin mcbride just to name a few but it depends on where you go i guess im one of the lucky ones and not to mention haglers old trainer Goody is the main trainer always good to get pointers from him and not over crowed at all just make sure you have structure and good guidence and youll be fine
Although there is no substitute for a good trainer, much of what you learn in boxing comes from observation. When you watch a professional match, are you observing their technique or do you look for excitement? Bernard Hopkins never produced an exciting fight but he was always worth watching. It is the same in the gym. Whenever you watch other guys sparring, look for their mistakes and try to learn from them. You can learn a lot very quickly if you are paying attention.
