They may be garbage in the corner, but we wouldn't really know. The limited amount of conversation we hear from them may not be completely indicative of their actual contribution. And this whole, "He's a natural" nonsense is for the birds. He was taught. He has a natural ability to learn quickly, but no one is naturally a good boxer. They are simply athletically gifted. The Reynoso's know their ****...
natural as in those fighters that don't need much coaching....look at Floyd mayweather for ****s sake..... have you seen the way they train canelo ? it's mostly all offense..... have you seen the way canelo fights....far from how he trains all I'm saying is that they hit the jackpot with him, and sooner or later he's going to need to move on....I'm all for loyalty and staying with the guys that brought you up, but if you're max'd out, and they aint evolving with you, then it's time to go elsewhere.....
I wouldn't say Canelo is max'd out. Yes, he's greatly improved as a fighter, but he hasn't fought the best competition. He's mostly beaten blown up 140-147 lbers, and he barely beat Trout. I won't hold the loss to Floyd against him because it's Floyd, but his best win so far is Angulo, who was tailor made for him sylistically. I'd need to see how he does against Lara before I can decide whether he's for real or not.
In fact I have seen how they train Canelo, and what is available is rather limited in regards to the scope of his actual training. Frankly, we're talking about Canelo as if his shortcomings are a result of his training/trainers, when it is a direct result of his lack of discipline. Ask anyone who has been at his camps, he doesn't work the whole time. I've heard more than one trainer/analyst state that. His problem has been, and continues to be, he lack of stamina, which he creates through his conditioning or lack of conditioning discipline. I would argue that it is the quality of his training, and his ability to quickly absorb so much good teaching, and of course, careful matchmaking. that has kept him relatively safe for so long. Like I said, he may be naturally gifted in regards to an affinity for learning physically demanding actions, and correctly repeating them under duress, but he had to be taught that stuff. He was taught rather impressive offensive pressure, solid footwork, good positioning, and a strong sense of defense and ring generalship, and he got that from the Reynoso's. donaire was always lefts hook, garcia never did anything to improve him as a fighter. with mikey he became an elite level fighter when he went back to being trained by his father. robert tried to make mikey into a brawler and he looked awful. you see the advice robert gives mikey in every fight its just the same, its always 'box, use the jab, right hand'. theres not much more he knows about fighting on the back foot, he can only give basic advice.
Canelo looks great against guys who just come forward or stand there and trade. Trout+Mayweather showed he has trouble with guys who can move and that he doesn't throw combinations with Boxers who can counter-punch. Canelo is a explosive fighter who fights like he trains and that's in Spurts.
The obvious answer to canelo is nacho beristain and memo heredia. their knowledge+location+language. Nacho has proven he can train defensive boxers as well as aggressive punchersÂ…whatever suits the fighters talents. Memo would keep him making 154 and make sure the kid doesn't gas out. too bad this combination didn't happen 4 or 5 years ago. It's scary to think. It's not too late..but of course it will never happen. Canelo is too loyal and wants to continue calling all the shots in camp and working at his own pace.
Anyone suggesting "Nacho" needs to understand that He is no spring chicken & he don't have the time to invest into a fighter like Alvarez who commands 90% of his time to learn the Romanza gym style.
This happens too often in boxing. The best example now is probably Lucas Matthysse, becoming a champion all on his own, he's the one that knows more about boxing in his entire corner, a bunch of milkmen improvised corner members.
Plus I don't know, it looks like there is some jealousy or bad relations between the two camps now. It seems like Nacho always picks Canelo to lose every fight they ask him about.
