Inspired by a recent thread I want to ask the following question. Assuming that one guy finally unifies all heavyweight belts and defends them in the rematch aswell, will it be bad for the sport or the division? I mean, after all belts are in one hand, the only fight that will matter is the champion vs the challenger. I think other fights will lose importance and the division might become boring. Somehow it is good to have different beltholders for the organisations as there is more competition to spectate and more changing champions. Otherwise we would have the same situation we had with Klitschko who kept all belts but had boring a boring boxing scene that time.
Not at all, you must look at the division as a whole and the prospects. There are many challenges out there, so I dont believe that the division will stagnate just because we get one guy who unifies, because he won't be unbeatable ...no way. All these big prospects coming up, I mean even guys like Yoka, and Hrgovic and Dubois.... will all have a chance in the very near future to cause upsets. This era is far and away from Klitchkos era. It is a strong division, we just need fights to happen a little more often.
They won't hold all the belts for that long. Either a dispute over a mandatory or a swerving of one mAndo in favour of a more lucrative, easier fight etc. Once a fighter has that status they arguably don't need all the belts to hold it in any case. For example, if AJ held this status. Would a run of the mill WBO defence against some dangerous but low profile fighter be more attractive to Eddie and AJ's sponsors than a high profile, massive money fight in bejijing against a Chinese fighter who is unlikely to be a threat? It's actually in the interests of the promoters to get some belts back in circulation for future unifications or to build other credible opponents for the money draw.
