It appears that WBC Prez Sulliman has ammended the WBC rules to indicate that a fighter cannot come over 10% of the weight limit the day of the fight. Effective July 1st.

The boxer must be measured the day off the fight and have gained less than 10% of the weight limit.

So for a MW fight like Martinez vs Chavez the same day weigh in can't exceed 176.

Here is the Sulliman interview, his English is not the best so interpret it as best you can.

    http://sosoboxing.com/boxing-news/audio-wbc-will-start-same-day-weigh-ins-starting-july-1st/

So does this mean if Chavez weighs in at over 176 on the day of the fight that the WBC will no longer sanction the fight as a championship fight?

If anyone has the link to the official amendment please post.

it probably means chavez would lose the belt on the scales but sergio could still win it, but even if chavez won he wouldnt have the belt anymore

If anything, that rule seems to screw Jr. over a bit.

The IBF has a similar rule. It doesn't seem the IBF rule or the Johnson death had anything to do with it. Sullaiman sites a death of a Colombian fighter amongst other things.

It looks like that actually means Chavez is going to lose the title no matter what's the outcome of the fight. overweight is losing the title like it has always been.

But knowing how the WBC protected junior in the past, I won't be surprised it's actually a way to protect him again.

How so? Besides him trying to not blow up to a cruiser weight on fight night which I doubt he could help.

Unless I am missing something from Don Sullaiman's broken English. Your boy will blow up to a cruiserweight on fight night and retain his title win, lose or draw because the WBC will no longer sanction the fight as a championship fight.

Will it help him in the ring? no. It seems more like a contingency.

I didn't hear him say that the champion would have to vacate the title or that the person could still gain the title that is why I said in the OP if anyone has the link to the official doc to post.

I am under the assumption that the champion would lose his belt on the scales. In that case, Jr. ballooning up too much would cost him his belt.

Perhaps I am reading something into it that isn't there.

I believe it had allot to do with it as he fought Jesus Chavez for their title, but also around the same time we had that **** between Corrales and Castillo and their weight issues being a factor.

I wouldn't put anything past the WBC, but let's hope they don't try something this stupid.

They surely can;t let him hold on to his title if he breaks that rule, he would hold the title intill the day he dies.
