John, I'm not a New Yawker but did appreciate reading about Chuchu back in the day. A real slam bang club style. I recall when he stepped up and got stopped by Ray Lampkin that he was calling it quits, but suddenly, he was signed to fight Kenny Buchanan in that Saturday afternoon series that ABC was televising back in '73. It was the only time I saw him fight. He gave a good account of himself and both he and Buchanan had these two almost exact cuts that were veritable gushers in back to back rounds. But Ken was really on that night and was not going to be denied. A beautiful straight right almost took Chuchu's head off and that was that. All in all though, he was a good fighter just shy of world class. Scartissue
Much appreciate it, s. Fair, balanced and generous. Chu Chu's been a friend since the '60s -- terrific guy.
He fought a good friend of mine, Irish Pat Murphy. He had long hair and once had it cut in the ring. Here's a story I found that might interest you. http://chuchumalave.wordpress.com/2008/02/19/the-longhaired-boxer-the-true-story-of-chu-chu-malave/
