I mentioned this on another thread but want to stress it as its own topic: the competing business interests known as promoters who put on boxing matches and have stakes in individual boxers pay officials. The commissions or title sanctioning bodies assign the judges, but promoters pay them. That's how boxing works. This is so messed up, but it's the basic structure of boxing and we seem to accept it. It's like the big dirty secret that we're not supposed to mention.

Judges and refs are therefore never truly neutral. Promoters at worst engage in shady deals behind the scenes with officials, at best judges know they'll get more work if they favour what promoters want. (Or I think they sometimes go against what they think they expect promoters want, to bend over backwards to try to be impartial.) But it doesn't matter if every match is deliberately rigged, or if not a single fight has been: it's a crooked system. Despite the organisational roles of commissions and title sanctioning bodies and the claims of officials that they serve them only, as long as promoters pay their wages it is they who in fact are their employers and have greater influence.

Basically. Because with the conflict of interest judges don't need to be told how to score, they're aware that the promoter who is paying them will prefer one guy to win, and they'll be aware of this scoring fights. Maybe they'll intentionally rob a guy to keep the game going, maybe they'll more often turn in bad scorecards because of unintentional bias towards their paymaster.

Everyone involved in the promotion is paid by the promoter ... except for those who pay a fee to the promoter to be involved in the promotion (merchandisers, somtimes television networks, etc.).

    The promoter is everyone's employer.

If you want to promote a fight, you need to put up the money to get the arena, pay for security, pay to print tickets, pay for advertising (creating it and positioning it in print and online), pay for the media tours (and all the travel expenses, media center and hotel costs associated with those), you have to sign the fighters and agree to pay them, provide rooms (which you pay for), provide airfare/travel expenses (which you pay for), pay the officials, pay for the ambulance on site, hell ... everything down to paying for the catering in a media room for reporters the night of the fight. The only thing you don't pay for is the sanctioning fees if it's a title fight, but those fees come out of the purses you pay the fighters (so you're basically providing the money to the fighters to pay those fees, too). And you (the promoter) have to pay for the rooms and the travel expenses of the sanctioning body officials who travel to the fight.

For any single fight card, HUNDREDS of people get paid by the promoter.

Not only that, when it comes to media (who they don't technically pay), the promoter is in charge of who gets to attend the fights for FREE, where they sit at ringside, what food is made available to them. For example, Fat Dan gets the best ringside location and the most access because promoters want him to write nice things. They make sure everyone has WiFi, that there are electrical outlets on the table in front of all the media. At Don King shows, his publicist would run into the ring and interview fighters after EVERY bout, print their quotes and pass them around to the media sitting ringside so everyone would have fresh post-fight quotes (because they all can't run up and interview fighters between bouts because the next fight is starting). Anything they can do to make their jobs easier so they say or write nice things.

So singling out judges is a bit hypocritical, considering nearly everyone involved is getting paid - or being provided with free stuff that's being paid for - by the same dude.

A good topic. Judges also get hotel rooms, dinners and other gifts. How on earth did Lisa Giampa become a big judge?

The point is, it's very clear to them who the powers that be want to win. If they play ball, they continue to get the good assignments.

You've obviously never been to a fight. Rafael sits in the middle of the press section, halfway back and well behind dozens of lesser known reporters.

I've been to many many fights. Fat Dan sits in the front row of the PRESS section, CENTER.

He's behind the broadcasters, but he's front row center in the press section.

If the commission selects the officials, then why would they get more work by doing what the promoter wants

Absurd. He's halfway back in the press section in both Barclays and MSG, even way behind the Mexican guys. He has no special seat.

And your whole argument makes no sense. "Everyone is paid by the promoters, so it's wrong to say judges are corrupt." Except that happens to be the specific subject of this thread.

I dunno whats the point of you guys watching boxing if you think its all fixed anways, what happened to innocent until proven guilty. Yes this stuff happens in all sports but you can't claim it to be a widespread thing without evidence.

Same thing applies to this forums obsession with determining if people are on steroids.....calm down guys and enjoy what is proving so far to be a great year for boxing

    Without evidence?

There's new evidence every single fight week pal.

The OP makes a great point, it's something I've noticed / realised for a long time.

Only thing is, is there any solution?

So just because someone pays you are therefore corrupt? No it's acually called having a job. Something you might not be able to relate to.

The WBC is a family controlled racket like the mafia or some kind of royalty. Jose Sulaiman made himself "president for life" and ran things for 39 years. Now his son runs the WBC. That's all you need to know about that organization. I wouldn't be surprised if the other alphabet outfits were run much the same way.
