Not about the show, the eyes. Jake Paul fights bring eyes from Asia, America, Europe, etc. Either eyes comes donations and military weapons. I’m not condoning it mind you, but I also don’t think a Jake Paul fight is necessarily about the money for Usyk.
Blue chip prospects like Itamu and Jake Paul are too risky for Usyk at this stage of his career. He will, and should avoid them. I see him fighting Del Boy again and calling it a day.
I don't think Dubois was a soft touch. Dubois was coming off 3 good wins including a devastating win over AJ. Clearly Dubois was a top 3 contender out there. The problem with the Dubois rematch was that Dubois pulled out vs Parker. You should not be able to pull out of a fight vs a top fighter and walk into a title shot vs the unified champ. Yes, its not Dubois fault that he got sick before facing Parker. But the fact is when he couldn't fight Parker, Dubois should have been pushed to the back of the queue behind Parker and possibly even Kabayel. Parker-Usyk should have happened last month. Parker could easily do a full camp since the Bakole fight ended quite early for him. You shouldn't be able to pull out of a fight and then walk straight into a title shot regardless of how you pulled out. Usyk has done a lot and deserves credit as the best heavyweight of his era. Time to retire.
Soft touch no, but unnecessary. Usyk in his previous five outings had not only clearly defeated Dubois but clearly defeated two heavyweights superior to Dubois twice apiece. The rematch wasn't an egregious step down or anything, but it absolutely should have been Parker or Kabayel instead.
He should go on a bum tour and rack up another 6 or 7 title defenses against cans. It worked for Bernard Hopkins, going by the fact that hes considered a MW legend for crushing no hopers and Welterweights. The man is 38 and a pure bona fide ATG. Hes earned a bum tour.
I'm still holding out hope for a fight with Zhang one day. I know exactly how it goes (Something like 119-109 Usyk, if not a shutout or late TKO) and he's far from deserving at this point, but they were the first two heavyweights I got interested in when I got into the sport so I'd love to see them share the ring. It's just a dark horse dream fight for me, don't judge But no seriously, like everyone else my preference would be Parker or Kabayel. Obviously both would be ideal but if it just has to be one, I wouldn't mind either of them. I personally think Parker is more deserving, but they've both been on the best runs of the current top guys and both have about the same chance of pulling the upset in my opinion, so yeah, bring on either. Truth be told though, I'd be happy as long as it isn't another ****ing rematch
I agree, except with Dubios not being a soft touch. Usyk had already convincingly beaten him and had better options imo. Ah well, can't unspill milk. Hope Usyk does the right thing next. His legacy will be shaped by his next few fights.
Funny thing with Zhāng is, with his seesaw momentum, he's always just a fight away from being a relevant contender again. Was knocking on the door with the victories over Rudenko and Vargas, then got a bit derailed with the Forrest draw. Put together a couple more victories, derailed by Hrgović loss. First upset Joyce, then beat him a second time for good measure - and, derailed by Parker. Big win over Wilder, derailed by Kabayel. I could see him, say, knocking out Bakole and Dacres or Big Gug or something, and entering into the Usyk sweepstakes. But yeah, Usyk shuts him out for sure.
@dmt, you got so close, then pulled back at the last minute. Dubois didn't set up the fight. Usyk did. It would be naive of us to think Usyk hadn't already been in discussion behind the scenes with Dubois. Dubois then pulls out sick. And miraculously Dubois gets an "undisputed" fight. This all just happened though. Nothing to do with Usyk selecting his opponent. Nothing to do with Usyk selecting Dubois a guy he had already beaten with ease rather than face his WBO mandatory, Parker
I suppose you could be right. I only pulled back because i don't want to be overly critical of Usyk. The guy deserves a lot of credit for unifying the titles and clearly establishing a #1 heavyweight in the post Wlad era. But if Usyk was already in negotiations with Dubois prior to Dubois-Parker, that is a very bad look. You should not be negotiating with a guy until he beats his opponent. I do agree that Usyk decided to take the easier route of fighting a guy whom he had already spent months studying in Dubois. I think Usyk would be favoured over Parker too but it will take him longer to study Parker and develop a game plan for that. So while i did not see Dubois as a soft touch due to his winning streak and punching power, i firmly believe Usyk himself saw Dubois as a lesser fighter than Parker and decided to take the easier route.
I've been hoping he somehow gets involved with the WBA, like by getting to fill in for Anderson against Miller or somehow scoring the Wardley fight, both of which are very winnable for him. I mean the guy's already fought for the mandatory positions in the WBC, IBF and WBO. **** it, go for the full set
Time is not on Usyk's side and he cannot wait till next summer for the next big fight which - I am sure we all hope - is his last. No one wants that last fight to be Parker. The legend who has beaten everyone vs the young gun who blasts everyone out. It's perfect - make it happen.
