Next Scottish boxing star ???

Taylor the stand out. Jason Easton had a good win recently, good fighter. But I like Lee McGregor/Willie Hutchinson in the amateurs, both great talents.

 

McGregor is 20, British elite champ 2nd year running & is flooring guys with left hooks regular. And Willie Hutchinson 18 is youth European & World Gold medalist. Read he was on a 75 fight win run too in paper article. Both cracking talents. McGregor has lost to UK fighter in the UK in something like 4-5 years although Jack Bateson has beat him twice with close decisions at Tammer tourney.

 

If Taylor gets beat by OD I rekon it's a major setback, I think this is too soon for Taylor and he was railroaded into this fight, can Taylor sell tickets ? Flynn has the fanbase if he's managed right he could go far. There's some real talent in the Scottish amateurs who will probably turn pro after the Commonweaths but who will coach them....

 

flynn will be exposed the second he is matched against a live opponent, he got big press for the interview after winning gold and imo he was very lucky to get that gold. i hope he proves me wrong but i think he will get ko'd by a decent operator maybe in an eliminator for the british

 

what live opponent name them, why was he very lucky to get gold he was already British Champ, you sound bias

 

I don't think Flynn is anywhere near the level Taylor is at. He will get found out eventually. I thought he was brilliant at the 2014 Games though, he really turned it on.

Willie Hutchison, Lee Mcgregor and Sean Lazzerini are talented fighters with exciting futures. Nothing is guaranteed though.

 

what did taylor do in the amateurs that makes you think he's at such a great level, it seems to be the trend on this forum to talk him up, has he even fought 30 rounds as a pro, I like Taylor but i think OD is all wrong for him at stage in his career, McGuigan is gambliing to get him into Ricky Burns place at the top of Scottish boxing but if Taylor gets ko'd where does he go, OD has the matchroom pr engine behind him they will simply find another route if he he gets beat. Flynn is going down the domestic route which is the right way to learn, a slow build. very very risky for Josh still i hope he wins.

The lads on a different planet from Flynn in terms of ability.

Don't agree with Davies being all wrong for him either, can't see anything other than a very convincing performance from Taylor and mid to late round stoppage for Ohara.

 

I don't over rate Taylor like many people do, he is beatable without doubt.
However in the amateurs he did beat world level opponents, boxed at the Olympics and was in the the GB set up.

Flynn was not. At the Games where he won Gold in 2014, I don't think he beat an opponent who was in the top 15 in the world.

 

Taylor amateur pedigree was interesting. He didn't medal at any of the major games (Olympics, Worlds & Europeans) but he beat some of the best, competed in two Worlds, two Europeans & One Olympics. He fought and won medals at both Commonwealth Games, including fighting with broken/injured hand at 2014 games & for 18 months (needed operation after 2014 games)

He beat robson conceição in 2012 Olympics who won Gold in Rio. He won the test event beating Jeff Horn, Anthony Yigit & Jemel Herring. He lost by split dec at second Euros to eventual champ, with his hand injury etc He fought in WSB.

Even before losing to Stalker at his first Commonwealth Games, he lost just two points on old scoring system on way to final. He's always been a great boxer. And if not mistaken he was voted GB amateur boxer of the year, all previous winners were great ams. Luke Campbell, Anthony Joshua etc

And he's achieving in the pros what few if any other British prospect is doing. A Commonwealth Title in 7th fight having only had 8 pro rounds up till then. OD is raw, rangy & hits hard. But he's predictable, one paced, sloppy, off balance, zero inside game, overrated speed, little pro/Amateur experience at a high level.

If Taylor is what I think he is, this will be a cushy night for him. His southpaw style will negate the jab, he'll use feints & footwork to close up the range, he'll prob fire straight lefts & pick OD to pieces. Taylor is not ready for World level but no other British prospect is moving as fast & still looking good & winning comfortably.

European Senior champs start tomorrow, looking forward to seeing how Lee McGregor & the guys get on. Expect some medals from team GB.

 

Sorry mate, only for debate. In what way is he overrated or by others? And yes he's beatable, but so are most prospects.

Just curious as to how you see him fit in. And compared to other current prospects or great amateur lads who have turned over?

 

Agree with Alex Arthur(?) on this thread in that Lee McGregor is the next big thing to come out of Scotland. I'm sure he fights in the next couple of days in the European Championships?

Aside from Taylor (and McGregor when he turns over), although Scottish boxing is as healthy as it's been, I can't see anyone reaching world level.

 

I'm not AA mate but I really like McGregor, he can box, fast & even at 56K can punch with amateur gloves on. Only 20! Not sure what's happening with Willie Hutchison but he won Euro/World Gold in junior category & is 18 but sponsorship issues meant talk of him turning over. He's a great talent.

Euros start tomorrow, it will depend on the draw but I think Lee McGregor can Medal. Peter McGrail is in his weight class, great boxer.
