Who will be the next US super middle to win a title? Honestly, I can't see any American winning one in the foreseeable future. It's a shame, since we have lots of guys who are almost at that level, but not quite. Who will step it up? Let's examine the possibilities: Peter Manfredo Jr The bad: He's already been TKOd by Calzaghe. Worse, he's lost twice to Mora, and one of the losses was legit. Anyone who gets outpointed by Mora is not world class. The good: Age. He's only 26 years old. Conclusion: He has a very slim chance of winning a title. Jeff Lacy The bad: Calzaghe gave him a whoopin. He is not as great as we thought, and is already 30. The good: He is a hard hitter, decent skills, and has a solid amateur career. It is possible that Calzaghe just had his number, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Conclusion: If he does win a title, it will be post-Calzaghe, since I have him losing to the other belt holders (assuming Bute wins). Allan Green The bad: He lost legitimately to Miranda. That's not a good sign. Styles make fights, but if he can't outpoint Miranda, how is he going to beat the top dogs at SMW? The good: At 28, he still has time to improve. Conclusion: Another dissapointment, especially after Miranda showed his true colors vs Pavlik. I don't see him winning a title. Jaidon Codrington The bad: His chin dates back to the Ming Dynasty. Conclusion: :tired Andre Dirrell The bad: Only been tested by Curtis Stevens on HBO. He won a clear UD, but not as wide as many hoped. Dirrell didn't show good power. Stevens was another up and comer, and had already been TKOd by a 19-15-2 guy. The good: He's only 25, hasn't lost, and is already ranked #26 by boxrec after 12 wins. Conclusion: Again, I just don't see him beating Kessler, Calzaghe, or Bute. I think he would lose to Lacy as well. He may win a title in four years or so though, but I wouldn't count on it. Andre Ward This guy is the only one I haven't been able to get footage for. The bad: He doesn't have a good KO ratio vs tomato cans, and has already been knocked down by a journeyman. The good: He won olympic gold, and was the first American boxer to do so since 1996. He's ranked top 40 by boxrec, and is undefeated. Conclusion: I haven't seen this guy in action, so I can't make one.
If I had to bet, I'd say Jeff Lacy. Please not Andre Dirrell - I think his brother is/was a better prospect.
How will he win a strap? Can he beat Bute or Kessler? Can he beat Froch? Only way I see him getting a strap is if a title is vacated and he goes up against mundine for the vacant belt. This guy is already 30 though.
That's a damn good post brother. I could still hold a little hope for Codrington and assume the BRUTAL KO loss to Green was fluke. Plus he could have learned from that early in his career. I don't hold much hope out for Manfredo, esp. after David Banks was owning his ass with straight rights on FNF's. Banks, he did lose to Smith a 5 round fight split decision on Contender, but he had Smith cut and battered and had it been at least 10 rounds who knows. He could improve and do ok, he has hella hand speed and appears pretty strong (Manfredo looked like twice ground hamburger). Lacy, we'll have to see how his injury has healed? and whether he lost it mentally from the lesson's Calzaghe put on his ass. Allan Green, Miranda whooped his ass so I don't know for sure and his health could be a permanent issue. Dirrell no comment, and I don't know enough about Ward to say much. Conclusion: The Americans are about as screwed at SMW as we are at HW.
If Kessler wins then Lacy is in trouble. If Calzaghe wins (I think he will) then he might move up in weigh or have to relinqish some of the belts (its a lot of mandatories for a fighter that age). Any vacant vacant belts then Lacy is a name and in position to challenge, I think he'll get his chance before anyone else on that list, which are pretty average bunch IMHO. They might well all fail to win a title, but Lacy will get the first chance, its the smart move to go for him.
andre ward was knocked down by my fav journeymen darnell boone who is great fun to watch like emanuel augustus ring tricks and pernell whitaker supermiddlewieght love child with half the skill and talent but alot of abilty(if that makes sense) anyways very hard to hit doesnt have super power and speed but is slick and wins on being elusive...well when you get dropped by him or lose rounds your not world class it's simple as that. boone is the perfect gate keeper if you win convincingly then your world/U.S level if you lose get knocked down or get outpointed more than 4 rounds then your not. and ward did just that. thing is most of these guys are weitgh changers who are more prefered of moving up in wieght later..most of the europeans stay at a wieght for the whole career unless they see an oppertunity or cant make the wieght.
We can always dream :good The guy definitely went against Green before he was ready though. He was 21 years old when that happened, and is now 23. Jaidon has shown steady improvement since then.
How does Peter Manfredo's name even get to be in this thread? Oh, I remember now, he was on that reality tv show.
For the same reason that Oliver McCall gets mentioned in the "next American heavyweight champion" threads. It's desperation time!
You forgot the name Chad Dawson. He's not fighting at 168 right now, but I believe he weighed in at 172.5 for his fight last month. He can get down there without too much trouble. And if he does, there's your answer. And that includes Calzaghe and Kessler, although I like his chances against those guys better at 175. Interesting thread, though.
Dont forget to mention....Green was VERY sick for the Miranda fight. Explains why he didnt have the fire he had in previous fights. He could very well turn out to be better than we think. And Lacy could win one as well.
