HBO craves money -- they are not interested in the best fights, but in the biggest fights. Pac v De la Hoya? They'd jump at the chance. Mijares, Gamboa, pre-Lacy Calzaghe? Not interested. They have 'better' (more lucrative) options.

What I'm meaning to say is that Bute winning against tough contenders wouldn't do half as much as knocking out an old and shot Joppy in impressive fashion. Show the highlight reel, makes him look good, and the name Joppy will ring a bell. Sadly, it's necessary in todays boxing environment.

Actually I think it does make sense.

Allan Green was asking for a lot more money then what was offered to him. The rediculous 30K ESPN was offering for the fight wasn't going to cut it.

Bika is way too expensive to get as an opponent now that he won the Contender. You won't see Bika in the ring again unless there is a big pay check on the table. Plus he is injured...

Also, why would Bute have to fight Bika in the USA? On US tv maybe but in the USA? Why? Anyway... didn't Bute already beat Bika on US tv?

That's where you are wrong. It's much more interesting to get a title shot as a mandatory challenger then as an hand picked challenger.

1- You don't have to give options to the champion's promoter.
2- No rematch close.
3- You're promoter can win the purse bid and make the fight in your own backyard.
4- Possibly more money.
etc...etc...etc...

Sadly there is probably more money into a rematch with Haussler then a title shot against Bute at this point. Not to mention a much better chance of winning.

And guess what! Joppy is NOT EVEN RATED in the top 15 in SMW by the IBF. His name somehow appeared at the LHW rankings after beating ETIENNE WHITAKER 32-27-2, so beating Whitaker made him a top15 world title contender. That guys fighting for a (paper) title at one of the hottest divisions in boxing How do you like that?

I agree with you. But it's his first title defense after winning the title. Kinda like Chad Dawson fighting Jesus Ruiz or Jeff Lacy fighting Omar Sheika after they won their titles.
