Great article. Well it is about one particular town, but pretty much true for the entire nation, boxing takes a back, back, back seat to so many other sports. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/27/us/27boxing.html?hp It is also interesting that America's golden age of boxing came AFTER the Great Depression. Maybe the recent Great Recession will produce a renaissance of some sort in 10-15 years? Hopefully.
youth boxing is really the only thing that can save this sport in america, tbqh. As programs keep cutting back stuff from schools(see this **** about to happen in detroit already) the prize ring will become a more and more viable option.
Are there good enough coaches still around though? What is the condition of the boxing coaching in the USA?
I can't give you an accurate assessment of the state of coaching since I know very few. But I am sure it is probably decent since a lot of them are much older man who grew up watching Ali, Foreman, SRL, Hearns, Hagler, Tyson and Pea.
Exactly. Are there any great trainers left in America besides the big time guys who seem more interested in training foreign fighters then Americans?
