I think Young's ranking of those punchers was spot on BTW. An honest assessment.

nice article, Young was my favorite boxer by far, love that guy. Even though I didn't know him, and there wasn't much out there about him at the time, because he wasn't the in you're face superstar personality, I always got the feeling he was a nice guy, a class act in all respects. He just oozed class and goodness

Young beat a lot of really good fighters.

So nice, if he had beaten Ali, and then didn't immediately rematch Ali, then the ABC's would strip him of his legit title....boxing politics being what it was.

Hey Red! Always been a Jimmy lover too!
A short window of prime but jeez, impressive!
After winning $100 off a co-worker, he gave me 4-1 odds for $25 bucks against Foreman, he said: "P i s s on Young, he can't even punch" to which I replied: "Yeah, not a big puncher but he hits hard enough to stop the big bangers in their tracks!" If he didn't have SOME steam in his shots, everyone would have walked right thru him.
That 'window' of his: basically shut out Lyle in Hawaii, the loss to Ali, basically shut out Lyle again in Frisco, beat Foreman, IMO beat Norton (just ask the judge in that fight who doesn't score a fight in Nevada) How about that 10th round against Kenny? We were goin' nuts in the living room!
I think the Norton decision literally broke his heart as evidenced by his Ocasio performances.
    R.I.P. you bad a r s e technician. :verysad

Jimmy punched plenty hard.I believe his lack of KOs is because when he stunned a guy he didn't go for the kill, he was safety first. Nothing wrong with that. I read an article where Cobb was mentioning Jimmy, Frazier and maybe a couple other guys he spared with saying those guys could swat! If Cobb thinks you hit hard, you DO. I also believe he was robbed against Ocassio both times. He fought well with Dokes too. Not bad for a disinterested aging boxer

Frank is the man. Answers your emails too. Jimmy was a damn good fighter for a minute, but after being edged by Norton, never was the same. Plus those young guns like Page, Dokes, Tubbs, and Tucker, especially Page and Tubbs, would always be a thorn in Young's side.

Page fight was hard to watch. Its like everybody he fought was at the top of their game. I would love to see the Tubbs fight. Would also love to see the pat cuillo fight and the other no names he fought at the end of his career. Its just unbelievable these guys could beat him, even with his problems.

I remember reading an interview of Jimmy Young in a boxing publication (I think it was in the British weekly publication, Boxing News). It was obvious that Young had an astounding level of recall of even the most minute details of his boxing career. Yet I later learned that Young had short-term memory problems.
