The contests illustrated on the accompanying poster are not recorded on Boxrec but the bill was staged August 1st 1925 at The Ring, formerly the Surrey Chapel (1783-1881) independent Methodist and Congregational church. Headlining is Belgian heavyweight Pierre Charles (1903-1966) who in his long career swapped punches with Tommy Loughran, Primo Carnera and Young Stribling. Surrey Chapel was transformed into a boxing venue called “The Ring” by Dick Burge in 1910. In the first two decades of the 20th century the venue was a popular haunt for fight fans and saw contests featuring Len Johnson, Jack Drummond, Alf Mancini, Jack Hood and Ted Kid Lewis. I love these old style posters some much more classy than the tacky versions you often see today from promoters. My personal favourite are they yellow background with red/black print.
