Lennox Lewis pulled up his sports car and got out and asked me for directions to a place called Kenwood in Hamstead, North London once as me and a friend were making our way back home. It was literally only about a two minute drive away from where we were. He seemed pleasant enough. I actually had a copy of a magazine called Boxing Monthly in my bag which I'd bought earlier on that day. It didn't cross my mind to ask him to sign it or anything though. Irish Olympic gold medalist Michael Carruth walked past me in the street once too. I didn't realize it was him for a few seconds and by that time he'd passed me by. I saw a little known pro named Everald Williams in the supermarket once too. I had one of his fights on VHS (which he lost by TKO) against another English fighter named Peter Richardson. Richardson didn't do much as a pro but did hold an amateur win over Vernon Forrest in the Barcelona Olympics (although Forrest held a win over him too, in the 1991 world championships). I didn't realize who it was at first but I knew I recognized the face. I sort of just stood there staring at him for a few seconds trying to work out where I'd seen his face before. The funny thing was I got the distinct impression he seemed a little intimated by me staring at him. Maybe he thought I was a bit of a loon or something. lol.
An unfriendliest boxer youve met thread would be interesting too. I'd say 99% of the fighter I know or have met are great guys
I met Herol Bomber Graham in 87-88 in Skegness where I went to school with his daughter. his ex wife worked for my mum. when he came to visit he took me for a drive in his black porshe and we had a spar (for a laugh)in his ex wife's kitchen. I was 12 at the time and had as great time with him.
I remember a few years back a guy posting pics getting drunk with Calzaghe in a bar, and said he was a cool guy.
I was a part time chef when I was 16 at a golf club where Henry Cooper was a member, I made him a breakfast. He thanked me and we had a bit of a chat about the current boxing world and about "entry's Ammer" Really really nice, down to earth guy was Henry and a damn good boxer too.
Funnily enough it'd have to be tyson fury in a caribean takeaway in hulme. Amazed at how different he was from the guy you see in interviews/twitter
Earnie shavers was a top man,he worked the doors in Liverpool a few years back and I met Erik morales in Halifax not long back,we talked for a while and had a couple of pints, really nice guy
Paul Smith, had time to conversate with every fan at a personal level. Glen McCrory is a gent, had a great 15 minute chat with him when I met him last year. Always hated him prior and still find him annoying on the telly though. James Degale was such a class act at the Westfield Shopping Centre public workout for Froch Groves II. Thought Anthony Joshua was a stuck up **** which surprised me considering his public TV demeanor. Stood there looking like he'd rather be locked up in a blocked up toilet cubicle at Kings Cross Station with his earphones in whilst his fans and kids tried to engage with him. Most
