locche is considered one of the greatest defensive fighters ever...how would you describe his style..he was not a fast fighter and was not blessed with athletic gifts..he was not a offensively inclined and did not seem to have much of an offensive repertoire...in most of his fights he stayed stationary without using lateral movement and moved foward..while he constantly weaved up and down..ducked from side to side...what fighter in history can you compare him too..and how do you think his defensive wizardry compares to pernell whitaker..floyd mayweather...and other defensive greats..

Roy Jones Jr. did a lot of stuff like that. Ali did it well. Winky Wright was slick. Locche was uncanny in the way he could turn away from punches to negate their power.

Haven't seen a whole lot of film, but from what I have seen you can say he is more comparable to Pea's style than Floyd's. Terrific head movement and from what I saw he simply embarrassed fighters using merely is defense alone.

Due to his offensive inactivity and his habit to be stationary I think he rates at lower spectrum of H2H ability when measured against the very best.

He definitely rates in the top 3-5 defensive fighters of all-time if not the best.

ive only just recently found out who he is but loved watching his films where he would just move his head slightly out of the way of a jab etc. im amazed how little he looks like he moves yet still doesnt get hit. Dont think anyone compares to him to be honest though one in a million

    He's unique.

But I disagree that he doesn't have a great offence. He doesn't punch in combinations, that's for sure, but he's got a great lead left hook and a good jab. In addition, he can turn the corner on the jab, hook with it late whilst maintining the punch's form, not many guys can do that, Ezzard Charles maybe did it better.

    He was an accurate puncher.

Not at all. The shell style he so often used off the ropes or from a stationary position to roll and counter was much more similar to Mayweather.

I think his defense was probably the most extraordinary I've seen, given how little lateral movement was involved. For a fighter to put himself at risk as often as he did with as limited physical attributes (not to mention unhealthy lifestyle both in and our of the ring) and still maintain such an uncanny level of efficiency on the defensive end is just astounding. One of my favorites to watch from a technical standpoint. Truly outstanding fighter, even if his limited style would more often than not see him out-pointed by the very best all around fighters.

You really should avoid making absolutist statements like this. Ali did a lot of thing with his head and shoulders that Locche did. The film doesn't lie and everybody can see that the film contradicts you, which doesn't do your credibility any favors. So did the other fighters. And we can throw Mayweather in there, as well.

Locche was brilliant in the pocket. Superb at ducking under punches and generally covering up from oncoming attacks. He could have been busier offensively, unlike Whitaker. His left hook to the body was probably his best weapon.

If that man lived for his sport he'd have been top ten all-time imo.

A savant, no other word for it. Such a natural, sport can be unfair sometimes.

I've seen a couple of his fights on Youtube and I think he was a magician. It seems like he almost had a sixth sense to make his opponents punches miss by a whisker while remaining poised at all times.

Anyone who hasn't checked him out should do so.

he was truely unique nobody can compare i guess...i mean mayweather maybe be the closest one but he has natural ability and reflexes..nico had none of those...he smoked in between rounds some say..i mean..i think he is a boxing savant..if he was much more active with his offensive output..he could easily be one of the greatest of all time time...sweat pea defense was all reflexes generally..mayweather used more technique such as the shoulder roll..nico defnitely one of my favs all time..so underrated and underappreciated.

Ali fought with a lot of lateral movement, something Locche never did. Ali often fought with his hands down and would rely on leaning back from punches with his length and, again, his range and movement. Locche stayd in the pocket and slipped/rolled punches. Ali rarely even rolled punches at all, from a technical stand-point he was not a very sound defensive fighter. Show me any film of Ali and/or Locche and point out the similarities, other than the fact that both fighters have footage of themselves avoiding punches.

Do the same with Winky and Jones Jr. as well, please. Mayweather I've already said I agree on.

Locche was probably the best i've seen at deflecting bodyshots, everything else about his style has been stated already in this thread. He did offer great counters though, every opening he knew he could capitilise on, he did, and the openings were created by his own defensive mastery.
