So far mostly just a brecher der tomaten können professionally (mostly Balkans), he is taking a quantum leap in class next week against Jürgen Brähmer. Most of his career has been fought at cruiser but he recently dropped to light heavyweight and seems to have not suffered unduly for the cut.

He is less than mediocre defensively, and his power is unproven beyond a certain level - but he does throw punches in bunches well and is a particularly devout adherent of body shots. Brähmer in his pomp would have shut him out easily, but the reason this becomes intriguing matchmaking is that he's now 40 and has been largely inactive since his WBSS quarterfinal victory over Rob Brant in 2017 (subsequently dropping out of the tournament ahead of his scheduled semis clash with Callulm Smith). Even versus Brant, it looked as though Brähmer had lost a bit of steam.

A big name scalp like that could put Schmidt into consideration for a shot at EBU light heavyweight champion Dominic Bösel, a fellow German, also 29.
