Nigel Benn 91st On 100 Greatest Punchers?

Those punchers lists are BS but RJJ certainly scored more emphatic KO's during the period before he hit 30 than Benn and McCallum was certainly a puncher at 154

Benn is an explosive puncher who swung from his ankles but maybe a bit overrated power wise

 

This list isn't just about power though, hence why he is fairly low. Joe Louis didn't punch as hard as the likes of Shavers, Foreman, Liston etc, but in terms of technique and precision he is widely regarded as the best puncher of all tine.

 

I would add that there have been an awful lot of fighters. True story.

 

Benn should Higher than Roy Jones? I'm not so sure, look at their fights with Sugar Boy Malinga, Jones destroyed him in 6 wheras Benn didn't trouble Malinga once in 2 fights

 

Benn had raw power and heart. Dare I say that's all he had.

In far too many of his fights he gets outboxed but wins rounds/fights based on a few shots that land and hurt/ko his opponent.

His raw power is out of this world and is p4p up there with anyone. But his delivery wasn't anywhere the level of some of those listed above him.

If you avoided a toe to toe battle with benn, you won (or should have won anyways). But given enough openings, if he managed to land a clean shot he'd end your night.

 

They're all better punchers who stopped better fighters. Log out.

 

Roy Jones cracked some seriously solid chins; brilliant puncher.

 

Benn's power is a bit overrated and his impressive KO record at 160 is misleading.

But McCallum was never a big puncher even at 154 more of a accumulation puncher.

Benn probably had more raw power at 160 than Bodysnatcher at 154 in my opinion.

 

I agree, Benn was a BIG puncher but not a MASSIVE puncher like Jackson, McClellan or Hearns. When you think about it, the only guys he actually KOd who were near world class were Robbie Sims and Doug Dewitt, and with Sims the shot wasn't through power, he just turned his shoulder into a short left hook off the ropes, nice and flush, and it was the follow-up shots that toppled Sims over. As for DeWitt, Benn couldn't miss him all night because his defense wasn't the best, Kalambay and journeyman Jose Quinones also stopped DeWitt so he was not unstopable by any streach. The Barkley Fight was impressive but it was stopped on the 3 KD rule and Barkley was very much fit to continue, and we all know what happend in the tragic McClellan fight

 

i think his counter punching and ability to draw his man on is fantastic.

eubank II, nardiello, mcclellan, wharton, galvano I/II, sherry.

i think outside of mcclellan. eubank II is one of his best performances. uses his jab, stays on the back foot counters the counterpuncher. which led eubank to charge foreward.

he got defencivly better as time wore on.

i think eubank had bigger one shot but benn wouldnt leave you alone if he landed a good shot he was following it up with something.

 

That's not the Benn i remember at all.Even the pure punching earlier 160 one.


Don't get me wrong he was no master and had glaring flaws especially early in his career, but you make him sound like a less skilled Cuevas or Sung-kil Moon

Benn threw bombs and hit hard but I wouldn't say he was a great puncher.

He did take out Iran Barkley and Doug DeWitt, fair enough, but then again so did Sumbu Kalambay and Robbie Sims. Against better boxers, not that he fought many (outside of Eubank), he struggled to find ways to stop them.
