As a kid I idolisied Nigel Benn, It was whilst weatching his epic battles with Eubank and mcClennan that made me want to take up the sport in the first place. I met Nigel Benn when I was 10 years old, my old man got me out of school early so that I could meet him, My dad knew a good friend of Benns at the time. I sat with with him and only had a very brief chat, he put his hands up as pads and told me to show him what I had. I did and he gave me this pep talk that lived with me throughout my fighting career, just that I had natural abililty and I could have gone as far I wanted in the sport. The usual kind of inspiring talk any up and coming amateur wants to hear. Its only now when you look back at his career and compare him to our current crop of middleweights that you realize actually how good he really was. One of the greatest British boxers ever.
Thanks for the cool story. Good stuff. :good Benn had his weaknesses, but if you couldn't take what he was throwing (and the vast majority could not) you wouldn't last long. I loved watching that guy fight -- you were always entertained and never disappointed.
Agree with the Hatton part, whats this about torturing Animals? I always respected McClennan for what he did against Benn, and thought he looked the real deal, but I assume he was convicted of animal cruelty, which erases all respect I had for him.
David Haye is a good fighter, and i like him, but hes a pretty boy and dosent ooze the menace that Nigel did. in terms of excitment? not in benns league im afraid. The closest thing to Nigel Benn now is James Kirkland, watch him tonight and see.
Animal cruelty is putting it lightly if the stories are true. He apparently used to get dogs and cats from rescue homes, tie their limbs up, muzzle their mouthes so they couldn't defend their selves and set his pitbulls on them. He supposedly once said something like "I just love watching things die." Not a very nice man to be honest.
..not a nice man..but a warrior nonetheless..the beating he received at the hands of benn, who is probably my fav. fighter of all time, was as brutal as any i have seen..but g.man took it..and kept taking it.....a disgraceful monster out of the ring, that fight was a karmic kick in the bollocks for him.....perhaps if he hadnt been so brave, he may not be in such a bad way now.....but then perhaps what goes around comes around after all and it was always meant to be that benn would be his fistic nemesis
