Didn't Benn return the favor, cheering Bruno on at ringside when Frank beat Oliver McCall for the WBC heavyweight title?
Call me cynical, but I think it was publicity pact. But a great gimmick, that is part of the memories of the fight.
He also was a super middle, they have weight classes for a reason. At a certain point, size and strength>skill. Floyd Mayweather Jr was a better fighter than Benn and Bruno.....yet Mayweather would think you were insane if you suggested that he move up and fight Bruno. In the early 50's, everyone recognized Robinson as a better skilled fighter than Rocky Marciano. And to a lesser extent, more skilled than Jersey Joe. Yet in 1951-52, Robinson in no way, shape or form thought of moving up to take on Walcott or Marciano because the result was virtually a foregone conclusion. It wouldn't have worked out well for the Sugared one.
I mean pound for pound. Honestly, Floyd is a good fighter, but he also handpicked too much. Manny 6 years too late? Nigel fought everyone he could when they were great.. I give Nigel more credit than I give Floyd. Floyd wants to be seen as another Leonard or Hearns or Duran or Hagler, but to me those guys fought great fighters and came to fight. Floyd handpicked. I guess being undefeated is great, but if you try to be undefeated and avoid tough guys at the moment, you can manufacture a career..
I remember them in the Sun sport page wearing smart suits and hats on the football pitch a few days before the fight
