vs Pat O'Keeffe (6th Dan Kickboxing/6th Dan Karate-Jutsu) Only the ending and no sound [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbOjze65rmA[/ame]
I didn't know Benn was a kickboxer: The fight took place in the mid-eighties - just as Nigel went professional. No one in Kick Boxing knew of him - at the time - and I took the fight as a come-back/warm-up. The late Alan Davies, a well respected name in Martial Arts, ran his corner. I hadn't fought for ten months and then 18 months before that [one fight in 28 months] so although I enjoyed a reputation as a good kick boxer etc - I was far from sharp. None of which detracts from Nigel's performance - he was was fast and strong. He came straight out and hit me on the chin with a right hand! I didn't go down, but it was a corker of a punch. The next few rounds were hectic - to say the least - I caught him with a good left hook, but the long and the short of it was he was simply too fast for me. I blocked a roundhouse from him in the first and it broke my left wrist - I was aware of some pain, but being adrenalised I wasn't aware that it was broken until after the fight, when I removed my hand/wrist bandages. My camp were furious as they thought they had been sold a 'ringer' - but when you climb between those ropes you have to accept things as they are. It is not a place for children. I have no complaints - I was beaten by a better man. Would the fight have been any different had I had more warm up bouts - well yes it would have been. Would it have altered the result? Perhaps not - but it would have been more competitive. As for Nigel himself, I bumped into him at an international kick boxing so a year or two later amd he was a gentleman. He came over and spoke and as his career grew and shone, my fight with him was seen from a somewhat better perspective. Nigel was simply one of the best fighters ever to emerge from these shores and I view my fight with him as not so much a contest as a Battle Honour! yours in sport Pat O'Keeffe
What do they mean by that? That money was fixed on Benn at good odds as an unknown quantity with his backers fully aware of his capabilities?
its Kickboxing with HUGE gloves, I did Kickboxing for about 8 years, thank **** I never came up against Ol' Nige :!: I don't think MMA existed in '85
