I was at Old Trafford as well for the rematch, i was at the first one as well, if i had to compare atmospheres the first fight was absolutely electric. Just curious of your username mate, i take it you are referring to John Conteh? We had him as a guest speaker years ago at one of our sportsmans dinners in Oldham, i spoke to him for about an hour, great bloke.
Benn`s punches were sharper, Lalonde was slopping and couldn`t throw good combos, Benn had quicker hands and beat better fighters.
Donny don't wanna none of that smoke. Benn was one of those fighters, few and far between for me, who put my ass in the seat on time every time. He didn't come to box. He came to fight.
LaLonde looked more impressive vs Leslie Stewart than Michael Moorer did just throwing that out there.
Yes, long story mate, which I will type down again soon, as a few people have asked. The only person i told it to was a top poster who I was pals with called Fighting Weight, who i'd planned to meet up with when Everton next played Villa but he sadly died young of a heart attack before our next fixture. I actually thought i had the story in my old PMs with him, but i couldn't find it when asked about it recently. Top fella he was, and the Lounge never seemed the same after he'd gone. A really great laugh.
Bloody hell mate sorry to hear that, i think i remember him from a while back, how old was he if you don't mind me asking.
He seemed very happy,Fergy. His main home nowadays is just outside Sydney,Australia. He's spent around six months of this past year going on meet and greets around the UK and he's got a similar schedule in 2024.
Not like the shower we have today mate, the man is old school and proud of it, sadly we will never see the likes of him in the sport again.
