Middleweight Benn was a fun, thrilling fighter, but very flawed. It was not until the 90s and the move up to 168 that Benn showed he could be a genuine world class fighter with more than one dimension. That Benn could slice and dice Minter up. But at 160 Minter has all the pedigree and class (in the ring), he would fight cautious, tie up and frustrate Benn. Sure somewhere along the line Minter will be cut, but I think by about the eighth Benn would be shattered and Minter would batter him into submission.
Well Effective can often beat Spectacular even though Spectacular will usually have more of a Visual appeal, in boxing Being effective is probably the under appreciated Ace as a fighter moves up in class, Alan Minter's Problems were emotional in most of his early losses, keeping his cool and not trying to lash back immediately were alien to him, leading to some cut eye losses, But when Alan boxed to order and kept a cool head he could be a hard man to beat, when he got the opportunity to avenge his Cut eye loss to the Dangerous and Wild Gretian Tonna Alan boxed a disiplined fight ..Tortured Tonna with his application of skill and solid hitting and broke Tonna's will and forced him to quit...and no facial danage, likewise he was punch perfect when braking up frank Reiche with his brand of 'Spiteful ' Boxing Tony Licata built up an impressive winning record, and was a very smooth boxer but against Alan he was never at the races and having outboxed him Alan took him out without any of fuss Alan had a great Chin and when using his skills and Mobility cuts became much less of an issue, also great 15 round stamina, And he could dig single punch and in combination when finishing of wounded prey, Nigel is going to make a mistake if he thinks he can bomb out Alan in short order, For a fraction of a second A Minter punch even put a tremour into the Hagler Legs...I think it would of had more effect had it landed on Nigel Nigel is Nigel, Like a spectacular Firework Display, full of 'oooohs' and 'Arrrhs' but may be prone, at middleweight, to fizzling out , Minter on form was like a Searchlight Disply less spectacular perhaps but more long term effective.... If Alan keeps his cool and boxes to plan he could start to administer some skillfull spite for a second half - last third Stoppage
I think minter would do well if he boxed and moved fighting on the back foot but I think alan would have to get stuck in and start s****ing this will result in a very exciting fight and alan being KOED in about 8 rnds
I think the improved Benn that came out of the loss against Watson would still want to draw Minter in to a fire fight, but would do it with more patience, and beat him by TKO.
I don't think that that Alan Minter could stay disciplined with a charging Nigel Benn. I believe that Benn will touch his chin first and then a cut inducing brawl ensues. Said brawl lead to an early Benn victory by TKO.
I think it's a repeat of Hagler-Minter. Minter may outbox him early on, but Benn eventually goes into beast mode, uses his physical strength and overpowers Alan, stopping him on cuts somewhere inside the distance.
Great post...saved me typing! Minter is under-rated by many (probably those who weren't there at the time), but seems to largely be getting his just due on this thread. The mature, less gung-ho Minter was a class fighter - a good, clever boxer, southpaw, excellent chin, good dig and a big heart.
I think Minter survives the MW Benn’s early attacks, and if he escapes them cut free his superior skill would soon turn the tide. Minter stops Benn in 9
