Nunn definitely won .. But probably his most unimpressive defense.... One fight where the loser (Barkley) got more props than the winner. Around this time Tyson(most had him #1),Chavez and Nunn were the consensus top 3... With most fans he left it between Tyson,Chavez as the top 2 after this performance.
I would take Nunn on points, Primes of course, once Nunn slipped a little I would favor Benn.. But I will take the Nunn of the Tate and Kalambay fights to beat Benn by decision.. I see his long jab and work rate being the difference.. Benn will push the fight all night and win the crowd early but he won't score enough points I don't think.. Given the tenacious nature of Benn if he gets Nunn in trouble late he may just finish him but my Money is still on Michael...
benn certainly never lacked the toughness. he may of lacked the skills I go with Nunn on points at 160
He beat him clearly and controlled the fight. I think it was a very good effort, but perhaps not an indication of greatness. Have the view of this fight been a bit swayed by the crowds support for Barkley perhaps? Barkley was brave, but in the end almost outclassed. How on earth one of the judges could give it to him is beyond me. But to get back to the subject, Nunn did take many chances with his technically deficient defense. Sooner or later someone would always capitalize. Toney, with his combination of power and sharpness, became the first to do so, but it's far from impossible that Benn could as well. On the other hand, Benn was far from a flawless technician himself. Hard to tell. Benn has the power, Nunn the natural instincts and fluency.
