That's how I was seeing it. As per the commentary, it suggested that Graham was only just starting to establish himself in what, the 9th? That made me think Sumbu might well have been getting the better of the rounds we don't see, which is a shame. Anyone have a report of the fight or whatnot? A fairly unheralded challenger (Graham had retired Kalule just after Kalule had 'beaten' Kalambay, so I doubt Graham would've been overtly terrified of Patrizio) away from home against a what, 35-0 domestic champion looking for a world title shot and it's a UD? I'm guessing Kalambay wasn't well beaten in those rounds.
Brendan Ingle after the fight is brilliant, his statement is summat like 'Herol has never looked worse than he did tonight and he's a ruined fighter'
"Tommy Hearns is a legend, one of the all-time greats. I loved to watch him fight when I was a kid but I reckon he would be about the easiest to beat for me because you can't go on forever, no matter how good you are." - Benn on Hearns, '88 "He knocked Tommy Hearns spark out, but the way his chin is now, so can anybody. Barkley's weakness is that he isn't much of a technician. He's the strongest middleweight in the world but I think I can out-box him like I did to Rod Douglas in our first amateur fight." - Benn on Barkley, '88 "Roberto I rate for his achievements. He was an idol to so many of us young fighters and is still going for another world title at the age of 37. He is still one of the most feared opponents in the world but I'd take that fight in a heart-beat. Big, big money mate and I hit harder than Tommy Hearns." - Benn on Duran, '88
Bokaj, you're not talking about the bit where Carpenter started rambling on about a beautifully done counter punch " a lovely moment of class just when he needed it" from Graham:yep When what he actually did was shift his feet and slam his right forearm\elbow up in an attempt to either foul or jab the too close kalambay who had gone for a roy jones leaping right hand counter and was knocked backward off balance by the forearm catching him under the arm\around chest but not at all hurt. That was one of carpenter's gaffs i was talking about perhaps influencing people.I don't remember either fighter being on obviously shaky legs until the last round kalambay counter right. btw flea if you've got the time you might as well put the fight with kalule up to replace my broken effort.I'm needing a new copy now
Must be that one. It came so quick and Graham's left was away from the camera so it might be as you suggest. Think I had Kalambay winning that round anyway, though, but that punch (if it was one) was the only thing that made it close. But as I said, I didn't have Graham win rounds because of landing clean, hard punches but by outhustling Kalambay at times and putting him out of his preferred tempo. There especially were a couple of rounds where Kalambay stopped using his jab pretty much and that let Graham in. Carpenter was so clearly biased that I didn't pay much mind to him. When I saw Kalambay rock back that time and Carpenter claiming he was caught, I did take him on face value, though. EDIT: Watched it again and it was no more than a right elbow to Kalambay's chest.
:good Its all good.As i say i appreciate hearing different takes on controversial fights.Still think we should get a discussion thread going around here to score and debate them, but it's never taken off.
I had Sumbu beating Kalule as well. Didn't score it but in my head had him winning. Late round knockdown made it closer (last round?) I'll chuck it up, we can discuss tomorrow after we all re-watch it thrice back-to-back, cheers lads :thumbsup
I'm burned out on that one to be honest flea. I think if we start a thread for controversial fights it would probably be better to start with something like the Jofre Harada fights etc something a bit more historically significant or with more widespread appeal to start with and get the thread going. Doing a vote based system could be good, as long as it doesn't end up heavyweights every fight :yep
I'm on about in this thread. Feel free to summarise your views on it here and we will speak no further on the matter. I'll take Kalambay-McCallum II in the new thread though :yep Or Conteh-Parlov, that's a real fun fight to get everyone excited about.
Let's just do a Pac-Marquez thread and hope some of the guys from General drop by. Would be a good way to put me off the forum for the summer at least.
