Benn achieved more in the US than any other british boxer. I heard about how he tried to kill himself and now is a religious convert because he felt he did many bad things.
Well, anyone in his position (young, money, bad influences) would have done things they are not proud of. Still, living the island life sounds good as long as he doesnt end up giving all his money away!!
Never got anywhere near the credit he deserves, part of a wonderful era, and a terrifying era when you see all the top people in his weight class, yet he shone, should be in the BHF, amazing hes not. Eubank and Benn had simply amazing chins, Eubank took all Benns power hits, as did Benn, then add McClennans shots into the equation, who was a hell of a puncher himself, it shows how incredible all three were in taking shots. What a pity we were never treated to a Benn RJJ fight, or even a Toney Benn fight. McClennan was a class act too, I believe he would have gone on to be as big or bigger than RJJ had that not happened, and as mentioned, he had an iron chin, something RJJ never had. Tragic outcome, great fighter out before his prime.
Nowhere near the ability? he was quality, handspeed, movement, technical ability, power, and oh yeah, he already beat RJJ as an amateur, so hardly ''nowhere near the ability'' the only downfall for McClennan was his career stopped before it really started.
So why did McClennan beat him? right before they turned pro? surely for someone not to be '' on his level'' means he didn't stand a chance, maybe you just never seen McClennan fight and decide to base your opinions on hype. McClennan holds a victory over RJJ and not the other way around, fact, and no excuse for this '' he wasn't the same fighter, he lost his speed '' etc etc rubbish we usually hear.
benn had bad intentions in every punch man! great video! Margo - i think its crazy to say that the gman was nowhere near rjj's ability as a boxer. as far as boxing skills mclellan was ahead of jones imo. roy was more athletic and unorthodox. sadly we'll never know how they would have done as pro's against each other. i think roy would have won but i think it's untrue to the gman what u said - and rjj is 1 of my favourites.
RJJ also lost to an unknown irish fighter in the amateurs. Losing a fight in the amateurs means next to nothing. All I'm saying is, based on their pro careers, RJJ was streets ahead of McClellan.
