The excellent thread about Collins chin got me musing.. If Nigel Benn being fortunate to have being blessed with the chin type of Collins, would it have made a large difference?
Where would we have seen different results do we reckon B? I'm thinking Eubank 1and Watson. Against Watson tho I add, Benn was absolutely shattered by the 5th so perhaps however good his chin would have been, it might not have made a difference. Against Eubank.? Yep, maybe not getting stopped in the ninth, managing to get to the end and perhaps the win.
Nah, Benn still would have caught Eubanks hands with his face and would still have a questionable gas tank. Sure, he might take a prolonged beating but unless he gains better endurance, patience and sets up his lpunches better or Eubank loses his own chin, he never wins that first fight.
The large difference would be in the opposition itself - would Mickey Duff have taken the Benn fight for Watson had he not even wobbled against Logan? No chance. That changes the whole landscape. Is Barry Hearn putting young Eubank in with a whirlwind banger who never wobbles? Hmmm. Does champion DeWitt take the fight against a guy who can’t be hurt and can blow your head off? The champion? He’d be silly to.
I see iron jawed Benn going to the States in 89 and facing Nunn. And winning by just closing the distance at pace and throwing his biggest punches in bunches against the lean-back moonwalker (that time considered maybe pound for pound the best was Nunn-and in terms of being smooth there was a case in terms of looking smooth in there).
