I seem to recall about a story of a boxer here that had been knocked out so badly that he later died. He was declared the winner and his supporters apparently carried him around waving his arms for him like a puppet as though he was actually celebrating.

 

Reminds me of that scene from American Gangster when the junkie is murdered by the dirty cop and Russel Crowe has the bright idea to open his eyes and pretend he is still alive so they can get through the crowd without getting lynched
