Then it would be either the best, or second best win on his resume.

One was the WBA heavyweight champion, and the other was the undisputed heavyweight champion.

How do your boxing credentials stack up against that?

Sharkey jumped on the floor from the weakest punch and who the hell did Valuev beat to win his crown? The heavyweight division was awful at that point.

Any one of these men could break you with their little finger.

Try to remember that, when you are tossing the word bum around.

What was the state of the division when you held the title, and who did you beat for it?

See, this is what sucks about this site.

The two losses were by majority decision, too.

Why did you say that win was a majority decision, yet didn't put majority decision when listing his two losses? Because that doesn't suit your narrative, apparently?

    Valuev easily could've been 52-0. Or 51-1.

Like I said, I watched the Haye fight live, actually ordered the PPV, and I thought Haye lost. Valuev threw 250 MORE punches in that fight than Haye did.

    Valuev was no pushover.

And, since the thread is about how Joe Louis' title CHALLENGERS would've done against Valuev, not how PRIMO or Jack Sharkey or Max Baer would've done ...

No one yet has explained how guys like freaking Johnny Paycheck, Nathan Mann, Jack Roper, Tami Mauriello and that assorted cast of characters Louis defended his title against was ever beating Valuev.

The TWO guys who actually WON against Valuev eaked out MAJORITY DECISIONS.

And by EAKED OUT MAJORITY DECISIONS ... I mean eaked out.

Nobody left him in a bloody heap on the floor or knocked him down a dozen times.

Good post. I never actually considered that some of Louis' best wins were not title defences.

Janitor "Yeah, but Johnny Paycheck would be an extreme test of Valuev" ;)

Exactly. Hell, the biggest guy Walcott ever fought was the very crude Abe Simon (who was SEVEN INCHES shorter and 60 POUNDS lighter than Valuev).

    And Simon knocked out Walcott.

How is Joe Walcott going to do against a 7'1 310 pound Valuev who is always moving forward throwing punches?

I see a fair few of Louis s oppenent s really struggling with Valuev. The sheer size of him, the weight advantage, his durability.
Did Louis really defend against any big bangers as such.
Maybe conn by running around the ring, pepping him with his jab, could win him a few rounds.
Walcott could Crack but once again, Valuev can more than likely take a good shot.

If we take these results at face value, then that one MD is absolutely critical to his resume.

We are comparing him to fighters with a number of good wins here.
I also watched the Haye fight live, and thought Valuev might get it.

I thought that Chagaev beat him convincingly.

I don't think that Valuev fought enough good fighters to definitively say how tough he was to beat.

Somebody like Chris Areola fought a lot more good fighters, even if he didn't beat any of them.

What does Valuev's record look like if we match him against those men?
I would favor him over men like Paycheck, Mann and Roper, but I would not necessarily favor him over Farr, or Schmeling or Pastor, or Godoy, or Nova.

I certainly wouldn't expect him to be consistent against that group of men, or indeed fight them all if there were easier options available.
That might simply be a function of his low level of opposition.

I lean towards the idea that eh had a good chin, but what if he had fought one of the Klitschko's?

Yeah, Chagaev beat Valuev clean, that means what it means. Chagaev trained very specifically to a very specific game plan though, including having these giant monitors all over the gym that showed Valuev full size. Could Walcott replicate it? I would like to see that fight, very interesting.

Primo had lousy body mechanics, I bet I punch pads better than he could, he pushed his punches, he was like 6`5 giant muscled child.
