Now, if we take how he was where would we need to place him in history for him to be remembered as a great?

I think if our own Suga Valuev had come along during “the Rocky era” with Ezzard, Archie, Walcott and Marciano of course being the apex predators of the division he could potentially clean out the division and hold the belt captive and leave on top after a KO of Patterson.

The best fighter of the Rocky era was well Rocky and he was only 5ft10ish and about 185lbs to the 7ft 328lbs Sugarman.
I think his Iron chin, jab, excellent power and monster strength carry him to ATG status from the lenses of black and white cameras and a shallower era.

This thread is just for fun, don’t shoot me down too harshly. Haha

If we went on size alone he'd be more than an ATG.. He'd be the greatest!!!

I don't think that he would ever have had what it took.

Charles, Rocky, Walcott and Moore would embarrass Valuev. He might be way bigger, but he's way, way slower.

He was big, awkward, slow, one dimensional, and not of very much talent. He couldn't dominate in his own era. Narrowly lost to a 33/36 year old Ruiz, 46 year old Holyfield, and actually lost to David Haye and Chagaev. I can't see him cleaning out a division full of guys younger than that (considered old) and holding a belt hostage while KOing prime Patterson at the end of his career. Not with as shallow of a resume as he has along with not passing the eye test. More than likely he is a foot note of the 40s and 50s as some big slow contender who maybe gets a one up over a couple other contenders but overall is seen as a pituitary giant with no real significance.

Valuev was a freak show who picked up a belt during a weak time in boxing

He never had what it took to be an ATG and he wouldn't do well in the Marciano era either

If size is the only qualification for greatness in that era, then why didn't Ewart Potgieter become champion, or at lest contest the title at some point in his career?

The truth is that size alone will only get you so far.

Not losing to Ruslan Chagaev would have helped

He held a major belt, so he can walk away with his head held high.
