A young Cassius Clay at the Olympics in Rome in 1960 told Nino:
"You're the best white fighter in the world!"

If he had kept up with his training over the years he would have lasted longer, He was known to live a playboy type lifestyle, as they called it back then. Party's, women, missed training, it cut his career short.

I can't believe that the guy never wore a mouthpiece not until the latter half of his pro career.

This is surely another thread but someone posted a what-if fantasy matchup in another site a few years ago: prime MW Benvenuti vs. prime MW Hearns? IMO that would be a humdinger!

Letter of the week in BOXING NEWS this week mentioned Benvenuti, reminded me of him so i dug out my copy of his victories over Emile Griffith on DVD. What a fighter, 1 of the greatest of all time (if it wasnt for Monzon he may have been remembered in even higher regard)

PS i never realised Emile Griffith is Bisexual. Thats what i get for googling, sometimes you find out things you dont wanna know

Nino carried boxing for a while during Ali's exile years.

Nino, was the 'Darling of the Mediterranean'

And, had a 'super' following in New York.

Great boxer with fast hands, and suprising power when he needed it.

Sometimes, a bit to 'upright', typical for European boxers.

    'BUON GIORGNO'
