This weird...about 30 minutes ago, without knowing that this thread had been dug up, I watched Benvenuti-Bethea II..wow...
Cool, im a massive Benvenuti fan, hes my all time favourite. I wish someone would make one of those youtube highlight vids of him with some kick ass music... I need it lol. You see them on every other boxer but not Nino :verysad
i was a huge fan of Nino's. Watched all his televised bouts It was good times for me when the Benvenuti-Griffith bouts were fought. I'd still love to see the film, if it exists, of the 3rd bout. Nino was a glamorous fighter back when boxing needed a touch of glamor, what with Ali being in exile. I think Nino was rediscovering a mighty punch, in ko'ing Rodriguez with that left and then avenging his defeat to Bethea with a right hand. He also avenged a bad showing against Doyle Baird before the end came vs Monzon.
yeah the other fights seem easier to find. this clip from the third fight ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP3bXXvOvdc I wasn't even born when he was fighting but I try and find as much on him as I can, I wish I could get a translated version of his autobiography
I have a copy of the third fight. Its a close fight. Benvenuti was a better fighter before he moved up to middleweight. He was faster and varied his style and punches better. He sneak left hook was a thing of beauty and the uppercut he knocked out Mazzinghi with was fantastic. It didnt hurt that he was huge for a 154 pound fighter. His revenge over Baird was home cooking, just like his stoppage of Fraser Scott. Those guys werent going to beat Nino but they shouldnt have stoppages on their records at his hands either. By that point Nino was a part time fighter at best and nowhere near the force he had been. His KO of Rodriguez was a nice reminder of what he used to be capable of but moments like this would be few in the future. He needed that punch as Rodriguez was giving him a fine going over.
His fight with Rodriguez was poor from both fighters.Never thought Rodriguez was well in front in that at all, though he'd finally had a couple of good rounds right before the knockout.
That sure was a brutal knockout though, wasn't it? Man what a rebuilding project for the guys that suffer that kind of ko late in a fight.
oops now I feel stupid im gonna have to watch the first two again to refresh my memory, ill also try and track down the third if it still exists
He'd already had about 70ish fights by the time he won the mw title on top of an extensive amateur background, + a combined 45 rnds w/ Griffith is probably enough to take something out of almost any fighter. Over the last few years of his career, he was riddled w/ various cuts & injuries & became very sparing in the use of his right hand (perhaps as a result of breaking it vs. Tiger), to the point that he almost seemed like a 1-handed fighter @ times. Correct. I thought it was about even @ the time of the KO - Nino got off to an early lead before Luis started finding some sort of rhythm. I think the real story is that Luis seemed to have momentum in his favor & Nino was busted up badly as the fight entered the championship rnds.
