Nino Benvenuti

Here's a couple films of Benvenuti @ his jrMW peak, both times vs. countryman & arch rival Sandro Mazzinghi. The 1st fight ended w/ Benvenuti sparking the normally sturdy Mazzinghi w/ a single uppercut. In the rematch, Mazzinghi put a lot of heat on Benvenuti, but Nino jabbed & countered furiously on his way to a dec.

Despite an already long & accomplished career both amateur & pro, Benvenuti was a revelation to American audiences when he came to Ny & upset local favorite Griffith to win the mw title. Benvenuti rebounded from an absolutely brutal 4th rnd KD to outbox & outslug Griffith down the stretch of what was voted The Ring's Fight OTY.

Training for the rematch, Benvenuti injured his ribs in sparring (reportedly @ the hands of Bennie Briscoe) & a more aggressive Griffith was able to work him over inside on his way to a dec.

Their 3rd fight was the closest of the trilogy, yet paradoxically, was the least exciting. I've always felt they made each other old over the course of their trilogy - I don't think either 1 was ever fully the same again.
