quarry. I think he has more in common with good slick punchers like satterfeild, moore, machen, foley etc who did well against valdes rather than those nino beat like jackson, london, erskine, cockell etc. of course valdes did edge charles one time by leaning all over him and wearing him down and quarry was stopped by a strong man like chuvalo but i just think quarry has the class here. quarry beat good big guys like lyle and foster who fit valdes's quite closely.
Quarry will have a lot of trouble getting away from Valdes' jab. It will cut him up. I still favor Jerry though because he was tougher and quicker than Valdes.
sue, Im going to sort out an old ring magazine tomorow. I want to quote exactly from it but from what i remember reading from it was along the lines of valdes used his strength to outwork charles and there was a picture of what looked like quite a gruiling exchange in a corner with charles squashed up against the ropes. I always had the impresion he mauled and tired charles. maybe my imagination has ran away with me somewhat but tommorow i shall dust off the magazine and tell you what was in the report that i read. there is no way I read valdes got up on his toes and schooled charles with a jab and "jabbed his head off". the very thought!

Valdes did do a lot a lot of nice work by smothering charles, but the same time also really got his jab working. Charles said "I was very surprised by his left jab". That is an exact quote.
perhaps he did say that. in this article however charles says "hes a strong fighter and a good mauler but he never hurt me". having read through a few reports now its clear valdes was no twinkle toes who exhibited a masterclass with the jab. my understanding of it is charles came in heavy and looking to slug it out for a quick win, shot his bolt and faded agaisnt a spirited mauler. a good fight though. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=Z-UrAAAAIBAJ&sjid=xmUFAAAAIBAJ&pg=4998,6638168&hl=en
