I think Lyle is more proven against a better pedegree of fighters frankly. Additionally, Valdez was inconsistant and would go on long losing sprees to fighters who varied all over the place in quality.. He was also a relatively large man at 6'3", 200+ lbs fighting in era where most men didn't reach such perameters; wouldn't be the case in the 70's.

I dont think Valdez was one of the better fighters of the 50's in fact in 1953, he lost 4 in a row to Baker,Moore,Johnson, and Billy Gilliam. Nino had a decent run in 54 but most felt he lost to Archie McBride. Then he lost again to Moore in 55 for the elimination and was given another chance to fight for the title but was dominated and dropped in the 10th for a 9 count vs Bob Satterfield. Acually Nino only won 2 of his 8 fights from the Moore fight in 55 on. Lyle on the other hand did make some noise in his loses to Foreman, Ali, Quarry,Young and he did KO Shavers, getting off the floor but I also think Lyle is overated. He drew with Gregorio Peralta a crafty lightheavy but not a top contender and I saw him get dominated by Jerry Quarry. I see this as a close decision and I am going to give it to Lyle by SD

I was reaqlly excited about Valdez when I first heard of him. It was someone saying something like 'Marciano retired so he wouldn't have to fight Valdez' God knows if there's any truth in that, but although he had size and power, he often smothered his own work and had poor technique (from what I can see)

Shame, the story was so much better than the final product.

Lyle lays him out, between 5-10.

Satterfield by the way must be given a chance at flooring any heavyweight, the guy was a demonic banger.

Valdes had a jab and some power, Lyle while relatively unschooled had a little more than that to his game. It could end up in a stoppage or even a close decision, based on how much Lyle struggles with Valdes's long jab. I'd pick him to win though.
