Smaller gloves does'nt always benefit the bigger puncher.

Take the Pacquiao-Margarito fight for example. Pacquiao was able to be effective and land telling shots because he was much more faster and accurate with his punches.
The smaller gloves benefited Pacquiao as its what he needed in order for his shots to sting the bigger fighter.

Had they been wearing 10oz gloves, Pacquiao's shots would not have carried with it the same snap and sting behind them and its likely they would not have cut up and swelled Margarito's face the way it did.

On the flip side the bigger glove actually benefits the fighter that brings more mass behind his shot.
The bigger slower fighter can still hurt the faster more precise fighter even with the bigger gloves, but not vice versa.

I say the bigger gloves end up helping the fighter who better chance in the fight is to bring it with brute force, and in this case that happens to be Cotto.

    10oz gloves imo benefit Cotto!

Very well reasoned response, and I agree.

Cotto's last 3 fights were on 10oz gloves.

The bigger gloves mean that Cotto, who is going to get tagged at will, is going to be in the fight longer. However his one punch power will simply be less than what it would be with 8 Oz gloves, and his one punch power is his only chance in this fight. This benefits floyd, without question. Plus it will be easier for Floyd the defend with larger gloves. As a boxer with a boxing style myself, I can tell you that most boxers prefer larger gloves.

I think Floyd wanted the smaller gloves because Cotto is prone to cutting.

This... Cotto cuts easily and Mayweather knows this, smaller gloves make it easier and possibly get a stoppage

Bigger gloves might be more thrustrating for Cotto if he decides to stand in front on Mayweather

I expect May to be wanting to pop the jab and straight right all night long

Might be dare I say it a boring fight.

Cotto benefits from 10oz gloves. His soft face won't take as much punishment.

If you land square with mass behind it, you're as likely to hurt a fighter with either the 8 or 10oz.

Alot more difficult to hurt a fighter wearing the 10oz and fast sharp shooting the way Mayweather does it.

Mayweather wanted 8oz for a reason, to sharp shoot and disfigure Cotto the way Pacquiao did.
That and that one punch shot shot delivered so quickly a fighter does'nt have a chance to react is more prone to hurt a fighter if its landed with the smaller gloves.

Smaller gloves benefit the quicker faster fighter.

I do agree with the one poster who specified that the bigger gloves will benefit Mayweathers style of defense. I cant argue with that. Mayweather is so multifaceted he's going to make due with the tools he has at his disposal. It does'nt matter to him whether its small or bigger gloves, he's so talented he just makes the adjustments and works with the circumstances.

10oz will benefit floyd more. less chance for a cotto stoppage and less chance for a ctto win. floyd could just win on points like he usually does.
