No Credit - Wins Where Fighters Are...

Just for the record. Duran sucked Leonard into fighting his fight. He prevented Leonard from even considering trying to box on the move, far less even try it. But Leonard, IMO, fought the wrong fight. As I said, I wasn't quite looking for him to move to the full extent to which he did in the rematch. But lets be honest, Leonard had the tools to get himself outta there more often than he did. Hell, even the press were shocked when they asked Leonard how he would fight Duran, to which he replied "stand and fight him". All the press thought he was mad.

If Leonard was at his best, fought his normal fight, and was simply beaten without any excuse whatsoever, I guess the press and fans back then in 1980 knew something some of you guys never. Cause nobody else had Leonard rubber-stamped for a flat-footed battle of Machismo with Roberto.

 

I still see it the way i put it in my last post on the subject, I've highlighted why, but i respect your opinion and know it's not born of bias becasue you are a Duran fan

 

Nah, Leonard was given plenty of time to put his regular boxing together when Roberto would drop back & box him from the outside as he did a lot & Ray willingly went back into the trenches to `fight`... it turned out to be the best thing that could ever have happened to him as from that point on he stuck to his strengths in big fights - boxing.

I think Duran recieves far more credit for the 1st fight than Leonard does for the 2nd fight.... it should be even because IMO that was both at their very peak.

Ps. Im a big fan of both fighters.

Tyson seems to get no credit at all for beating Holmes. It's like it may as well had never even happened.

True that Larry Holmes was 38, but his style of boxing is one that lasts a long time in the sport. It also wasn't even close--it was a total destruction, and Holmes had never been taken out like that before, or since. I also think it's foolish to think that Holmes didn't care to win that fight and was "going for a payday". Beating Tyson would have been a HUGE win for Larry--it would have vindicated his career in many ways. You know he wanted it badly.

 

Yeah the second fight should get full credit for Leonard.

Yeah, at long range Leonard simply stood his ground and let Duran come inside on him. And I really couldn't care how well Duran feinted and countered, as Leonard had the ability swifty avoid these charges with some lateral movement and glide away to reassess the battlefield. While this would have taken away some of his own offense to a certain degree, it would have made Duran far more ineffective. I've been fair here, as I'm not quite looking for a New Orleans version of Leonard regarding movement.

It's like this in a nutshell. Leonard stood his ground far too often, and he had the ability to do otherwise.

I will try and find that clip in the middle section of the bout where he starts to get in and out snapping a rapid jab and Duran nips it in the bud.

 

Walcott does not get enough credit for knocking out Harold Johnson in 3 rounds because of boxrec. This is a big win over a young 28-1 Future Hall of Famer

 

Montell Griffin gets zero respect for that first Jones bout. Jones had every physical advantage possible in the match but that Griffin sure fought smart in there and took him out of his game. But Futch knew the holes in the Jones game and had a 5'5" fighter not only hang in there, but winning rounds against the guy and testing him.

If SRR moved and punched 3 times as much its his choice. It was SRRs choice to move up in weight.

I dont think i can agree or disagree as we didnt really see barrera fight Khan without that cut which was terribel.

Anyone who beats Duran, gets the Duran wasnt at his best/drained excuse, Leonard 2, Benitez, Laing all given little credit at all.

 

Well the point is it wasnt as hot as it was for SRR and doing F All for 10 rounds obviously didnt dehydrate/drain him as much atsch
