No established boxer without a history of a ground game will ever do well in mma.

Just like the skills required to box, the skills required to grapple at a high level needs to be learned at a young age. At least for present and future mma. A Pac man is just to old to ever even be competitive against fighters like Aldo who have developed a ground game in his teens.

mma is about fighting on your strenghts and exposing your opponents weaknesses it would be very difficult buy pac could be effective in mma just like wrestlers without striking backgrounds have been, just like bjj fighers have been.

Mirko cro-cop is probably the best example. even though he may be a special case, he was successful with limited ground abillites, now why cant a boxer achieve the same or better success?

I agree it is not very likely, especially considering the pay in both sports.

Ill say if paquaio a notoriously hard trainer was serious about trying mma and trained tdd and sub defense and then slowly developed a ground game and clinch technique compatable with mma he probably could do well.

pacs speed, movement and power would make his opponents very predictable (shooting in for takedowns) and if he developed the right skills to the level he would need (theirs no guarantee he would even with the best training) he could be one of the most exiting fighters in two different sports.

then again he could just go into kickboxing / muaythai for which he has trained previous at what level I dont know.

I hope he does neither because I want to see him kick some ass in boxing. remember he also has a political career to think of.

well, here is the problem...boxers have been good starting late..they dont get great..but they can get good. Jamil McCline didnt start boxing until he was in his late 20's..now is he a great boxer? hell no. But he was once a legit top 10 heavyweight. So, a guy like pac...who's hands would be so much faster more powerful (at his weight) and just reflexes would be better (plus he has done some muay thai as well) would not need to become great at grappling...he wouldnt even need to be as good a grappling as jamal mccline was at boxing..he would just need to have pretty good take down defense..know how to escape...or at least lay and pray till the ref stands them up....and if he could do that..he could beat a great many fighter..same thing with a guy like klitschko....klitschko basically fights like tim silva..only a million times faster and more powerful and more skilled...now could he get as good at take down defense as silva in a year..maybe not..but could he get..say..allot better then Toney? i think so...anyhow...moot point at this point..not enough money yet in mma for any of the top guys to go into mma....just aint worth it.

Pacquaio will blast all these guys at FW who loves to forget their ground game and loves to fight stand up. Aldo, Torres, Garcia, all these guys with good stand up, Pac will knock them all out standing w/o question if they decide to box or even kickbox.

You think they would try? No, low single to mount to finish.

    who mentioned floyd? not me

sure a talented boxer could KO some mma chumps with a couple years training TDD

but what many fail to realize is the in order to have solid TDD you must alter your base, which throws off a trained boxers mechanics

basically, you would need to put one crazy athletic boxer in with a very non-athletic grappler (see silva/maia) where his athleticism would win, not his skill

If MMA boxing wants to evolve, someone has to try eventually. I like the Vitor challenge to Toney. Hopefully MMa can lure some mid level boxers to come fight.

Im not sure its even the base, I think Boxing footwork, not necessarily the stance can be to the boxers advantage. Its just knowing the distance, moving around. Chucks great at this.

Ive seen some guys who are great wrestlers but have trouble shooting at someone out of tentativeness. Also, there are guys like Franklin, GSP, who have been very good at developing a ground game from osmosis. Im sure a couple of years training grappling would benefit.

but that great footwork is great for boxing...it will also get you taken down, because it's more closed, wider, and just asking for someone to single that front leg

changing a boxers stance/footwork will alter their punching, without question

although, if there are people who i think could have had mma success it would have been pac (think its too late now) and a younger rjj (more than pac because he did have true 1 punch KO power)

i think both these guys had the athleticism to be dangerous, and were not you cookie-cutter boxer, so they already had some built in advantages in regards to their footwork/angles

This is a great point, theyll have no leverage if they did, theyd be all tangled up lol. Roy would have been great just because he is so quick esp with MMA gloves:lol:, youd be out before you can think takedown.

Its too bad that boxing is one of those isolated sport in america where, if you box, youve boxed from the start, no scholarship from colleges. Unlike a basketball guy who played Football and ran track, boxing aint like that. Im sure there are guys now doing wrestling and boxing outside school.
