Why do some defeats in boxing history get explained by excuses. I dont mean poor judging decision. Here are a few examples that I often hear 1. Tyson vs Douglas ( Tyson was out of shape, underestimated his opponent ) 2. Ali vs Frazier 1 ( Ali was rusty after the lay off, underestimated his opponent) 3. Lewis vs Rahaman ( Lewis was out of shape, underestimated his opponent, not acclimatised to the altitude) If you underestimate your opponent or come into the fight out of shape when fighting for the heavyweight championship then its NOT a valid excuse, its a lack of professionalism. You lost the fight at the time and on the day the opponent was better than you. If someone gets an injury during the fight so they are unable to continue or box to their best then thats a more valid reason for not winning. Here are two fights where an excuse is more valid than the last 3 examples but hardly ever get mentioned. 1. Hearns vs Hagler ( Hearns gets a leg massage before the fight which turn his legs to rubber making him unsteady on his feet and breaks his hand in the opening round making a knockout almost inevitable) 2. Foreman vs Ali (Foreman gets cut weeks before the fight and is unable to do any running in the weeks leading up to the fight to allow the cut to get better which must of had an impact on his stamina)
#2 is hardly an excuse. This bout was scheduled for September 24th and eventually took place on October 30th. Both fighters had ample time to get in shape. If the cut inflicted by Bill McMurray hurt anyone, it would have been Ali. Being the older fighter and both on target for peak condition for the Sept. 24th date, it would have hurt the older fighter who would have to pause his training and regroup for the later date. This had nothing to do with Foreman's lack of stamina because Foreman never had stamina. Case in point: What did he learn from the Ali fight? Nothing. He went into the Jimmy Young fight with the same mentality and ignored Gil Clancy's methods. Same result as Ali. A smart, cagey fighter who could take a good wallop and Foreman is gassed again when he doesn't fall.
Certainly with Ali - Frazier 1st a lot of good judges, certainly off the Bonavena fight, felt that Ali could have done with one or two more 'Rust Shedders' But not knowing if his Licence would be revoked again did lend the fight an urgency that eliminated the ability to bring it to the boil at a more steady pace, So Ali's rust excuse was i feel Valid, paricularly against an absolute Peak Frazier, Having said that... i still feel that Ali may of won if not Nailed by that 11th round Big Left Hook, it took a lot away from Ali's customary strong finish, Again, perhaps with less rust he would not of been caught, Most of the boxing world Felt Douglas had no chance, and Mike had such a belief in his prowess, the chances are that he would find a banana skin at some stage, with Douglas losing his mother Pre Fight, many feared a quick fold, few could predict that, with this, for one night Douglas, who always had Talent, would also have Steel in his heart .. As for Lennox, it was unprofessional to distract yourself with Hollywood assignments, and not allow yourself time to acclimatize, but again with a total belief in ones abilities, and of course underestimating one's opponent, The Psychology of the fighter prevails, I think it is part of a fighters inherent make-up to look for reasons for their failure... so as to incentivise them to regroup and endure, i think its a basic human psychology at work...
I agree wholeheartedly sometimes I think guys have excuses already Made up before they get in the ring because they know their gonna lose.. I hate excuses, their like Assholes, everybody has one and their full of ****, take your loss like a real man, and accept the fact that you lost to the better fighter on that particular night..
I agree with the sentiment of the thread. The favourites on this website have an army of fans with a litany of excuses as to why their man lost. It always strikes me as odd that the opponents of said fighters (the less glamourous or popular) never seem to be given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to off-nights, bad luck, etc. In short, a favourite loses because of (put excuse here) but the opponent loses because the favourite is just better. One of the examples listed above, the Hearns rubbery legs one, I've never bought I have to say. A good massage if anything should increase blood flow and therefor have the opposite effect to what it supposedly did. Broken hand? Fair enough. But rubber legs? Nah. Hearns often seemed to have rubbery legs, even in fights he won.
I've heard also from a former trainer (now the trainer of the Swedish national boxing team) that a massage takes away a lot of the explosiveness in the muscles and therefore is a bad idea before a fight or even training. So if a massage did indeed happen, it probably hurt Hearns's chances. Personally, I think Hagler would have gotten him anyway sooner or later. The intensity of the massage is probably also a factor. Thai Massage or even Swedish Massage in all probability relaxes the muscles too much and takes away explosiveness, but a lighter massage could perhaps be more beneficial. This is what a google search gave: http://www.massagetherapy.com/articles/index.php/article_id/1310/How-long-Should-I-Wait-to-Exercise-After-a-Massage-or-Bodywork-Session- http://elementsmassage.com/blog/93/should-i-get-a-massage-before-or-after-working-out http://www.livestrong.com/article/536227-can-you-work-out-after-a-full-body-massage/
The same "excuse" is made for Dempsey losing to Tunney and Tyson losing to Holy. Even more so, since they are both universally recognized to have been hurt by their lay-offs while many here argue Ali in fact wasn't, or even helped by it. So why not mention Dempsey-Tunney and Tyson-Holy as losses that are being excused?
Another excuse thread? I'll just quote what I said last week. And the thread from last month. Also, got to add Game 1 of the 1996 American League Championship, Yankees vs Orioles. A kid in the stands reached into the field and caught a ball before the outfielder could and changed an out into a home run, thus changing the outcome of the game and sending the Yankees to another world series. Plus, there was a game that the Boston Patriots won on account of a fan sneaking onto the field and blocking a pass. I could add fanman into the mix for boxing, but that only upset Holyfield's rhythm and turned a knockout into a UD by giving Bowe a breather. A better example for boxing would be Bowe vs Lewis in the Olympics with that British stoppage and Bowe still standing ready to continue.
An example of a valid excuse, would be Lou Nova's inability to deploy his cosmic punch, due to the rotation of the earth!
Excuses also have double standards here is one example: Ali vs Norton 1 - Ali lost the fight due to a broken jaw. This is true, sustaining an injury during the fight is a valid excuse - but he still lost. It was remarkable for Ali to finish the fight but his corner did not pull him out during the fight and Ali wanted to continue. However, I scored the Thrilla in Manilla even after 11 rounds but between rounds 12-14 Frazier due to swelling on his good eye( he was blind in the other eye) cant see the punches and loses the next 3 rounds before his corner pulls him out even though he wants to continue. If it wasn't for the swelling then Frazier who seemed in just as well conditioned as Ali could have won rounds 12-15 but this is never a valid excuse for Ali fans.
Norton vs Foreman The winner of this fight would fight Ali in Zaire. Norton did not know about this and didn't fight at his best.
there are PLENTY of valid reasons why a fighter can lose a fight, plenty of them, just the same as Not All wins are legitimate wins for varying reasons. they can be such things as fighting while sick, cold or flu, injury that isn't quite healed, short notice for a fight, busy schedual, i.e 5 fights in a month or 2 or 3 fights in as many days with travel in between, making weight and then of course the blatant Robbery or Questionable Decision. the latter two also nullify the other fighters Win or Draw. Of Course there are Legitimate Reason for a Loss, but most of the time the fights are proper wins or losses, but yeah there are always going to be a few indiscretions on every fighters record. what about fighters who are 'paid' to go through the motions, capable of causing an upset and changing a kids career, but who are paid to lye down, what about corruption, Of Course there is funny business in the BUSINESS of boxing, so to pretend it isn't full of it, is just plain ignorant to boxing.
