I t would allways be a hell of a fight wouldnt it? I remember a line from Rio Bravo ,an old John Wayne western ,Wayne is talking up Ricky Nelson as a gunfighter,a drunken Dean Martin ,[good casting],asks him "is he as good as I used to be"? Wayne replies,"Id hate to have to live on the difference".

What do you think about Joe Louis and/or Jack Johnson being able to outpoint '67 Ali, John?

I think Louis has to stop him. I think over the course of 10 or 15 Ali is going to outpoint Joe, but Joe of course is a big stoppage threat to anyone he shares a ring with, ANYONE.

What about Johnson? I don't know a great deal about him, but from what I've read his boxing skill was exemplary. Perhaps not as good as Ali's, but I don't know that with any degree of certainty.

I thought about using rubbish, but the other, four-letter word, seemed most appropriate. No sense in using the "r" word with people who may be unfamiliar with it....

    Bull**** !

These are not excuses, they are fact....
Ali was out of shape & badly underrated norton in fight 1
Ali was never the same after the 3rd frazier fight & was a a shell of the old ali in the 3rd fight
Ali won fight 2 clearly when both men were 100% by sweeping the 1st 5 rds by staying on his toes, something he could do all night long in the 60s & do it even faster.

Prime Ali has an easy night vs norton, Ive already done a thread on this, Ali was a level above norton.

Also... Ive long believed that the Ali of 64-67 was the hardest to beat & greatest hwt of all time & imo prime tyson gives him his toughest test stylewise even tho I rate joe louis ahead of mike in my top 10 hwt list.

    Cheers.

Who's to say Liston and Foreman didn't underrate Ali when they fought him? They likely did.

ps. Fight 2 is no clear win. Most have it 6-5 or 7-5 to Ali. Some even had it even (and a few Norton winning). I'd say overall the most popular scorecard was 6-5-1. You call that clear cut?

You must put the things you read into the perspective of the time it was written in. If you would read a report of the best car ever built you would read that it was very comfortable, a lot less loud than most car, has good handling, a fine acceleration and could brake down really fast.

Then you read that the report is made in 1910 and that the car has a top speed of 30 miles/hour and requires 2 litres of fuel per mile.

For the boxing of that day, Johnson was enormously skilled. For the modern (and by that i mean post-40's) boxers he would come up short seriously. In his day, boxing was still in a transition from bareknuckle style to gloved style. Half of the time they wrestled and the other half they fought in close. Johnson never threw jabs, straight 1-2's or combinations with more than 2 punches. He never or rarely had either of them (including jabs) used against him, either, so his defense wasn't designed to take that either. Johnson was great in his day, but i don't see him winning a single round against Ali because Ali will dance away and hit him with straight punches while Johnson wants to get in a clinch, throw one punch at a time and lean on a middleweight.
