No Heavyweight Champion Has Lost His Title On Cuts & It Won't Happen

A poster here states no reigning heavyweight champion has ever been stopped on cuts and lost his title.
In this he is correct
He further states that it won't ever happen because no referee would dare to stop a contest and award the title to the challenger via tko because the champ was too badly cut to continue.
As proof of this he cites the fact that it has never occurred.I pointed out that there have only been two cases when it might have been correctly implemented
The first was in1902 when a comebacking Fitzsimmons smashed Jeffries face into a gory mess but in doing so damaged his already suspect hands so severely he had nothing left to fight with and was kod by the super durable Jeffries. That fight was well over a hundred years ago,changing attitudes and safety concerns have seen fight stopped earlier these days.
The second occasion was when a stray elbow from Ezzard Charles sliced defending Champion Marciano's nose in half in the 6th round of their second fight Marciano was well ahead on points at this time .Going back to his corner Marciano was told they might stop it unless you get him out of there in the next round.The Doctor examined the cut and after listening to the corner pleading for the fight to continue, allowed it to do so.Marciano, like the great warrior and champion he was rose to the occasion in the 7th he hit Charles with an absolute blizzard of punches and referee Al Berl counted out the challenger.
That fight was 67 years ago ,and watching fight films of that period we can also see bouts were allowed to continue longer than most similar ones would be today.
Many years later Vitali Klitschko suffered horrendous cuts in his title challenge to Lennox Lewis,5 cuts needed a total of 64 stitches ,and Vitali's corner had no choice but to pull their fighter out.
Here is my question if Vitali [who was ahead on points ] had been the champion ,instead of the challenger would the referee have allowed the fight to go the distance ,? Would he have permitted Vitali to take more punishment to his eyes and face and last the distance simply because he was the champion?
Or would he at some point ,have looked at the damage to the Ukrainian's face and said ," this fight is over"?
