Hmm, Duran had a month to lose 50 pounds! Arcel wanted the fight postponed, he knew Duran would lose, just not like that.

I've heard so many different stories about what happened in the No Mas fight, I think the truth is lost in the sands of time, kind of like Sonny Liston's real age. I don't think we'll ever truly know the truth.

The psychological tactics of Leonard are what made Duran quit . a lot of fighters quit on their stool , he quit in the middle of the ring on his feet . And it's a shame that revisonist history has taken the luster off a great victory

Both fighters confirmed on Oct. 2, 1980, that the fight would take place on Nov. 25.

It was officially announced a couple of days later to press attending the Holmes-Ali fight.

So that’s nearly 2 months. No way they are there together to make this announcement if the deal hadn’t yet been reached at least a few days prior, so you’re at least 2 months out that they know they have to start training.

The first fight was June 20. So that’s a little more than 3 months to gain 50 pounds.

This account in the Washington Post was filed by a writer who had been at Duran’s training camp in Miami. The fighter had been training there for six weeks and the fight was almost 10 days away:

A far as the actual words , Duran says he said No sigo which means I can't go any further , basically means the same thing, as no mas means no more

From what I've seen in an interview, or maybe it was in the 30 for 30, the Leonard camp was working on the rematch fast when Leonard was in Hawaii so I can't remember when that was.

Yeah, this is one of those myths that will never die. Duran knew about the possibility of a November rematch by August, and he was back in the gym training by early/mid September.

50 lbs in 1 month? I don’t know if that was an exageration, but that would be almost impossible to do without losing a lot of muscle, or becoming severely dehydrated.

To lose 1 lb of fat, one has to burn an additional 3600 calories, which is more than running a marathon (2600 calories). That much endurance work would be counterproductive and would only run you down.

So let’s be conservative as say he could lose 1/2 lb of fat per day. That’s only 15 lbs of fat in 1 month. That means the rest of the 35 lbs of weight loss would be muscle and water. I doubt that he lost that much muscle, but maybe 15 lbs muscle and the rest water, which would mean he would have to rapidly rehydrate himself, and if not done correctly could certainly lead to cramping.

Considering how much was stacked against him, it is actually surprising that Duran was able to show up and stay in the fight as long as he did.

2 months is still not enough time to lose 50 lbs correctly. 1/2 lb/day would only result in a 30 lb weight loss.

Bottom line, in the first fight Duran used every ounce of himself to achieve an all-time win and beat Leonard. Leonard fought the wrong fight entirely and still came close. For the second fight then, he didn't have as far to reach to win, as opposed to Duran, who would have had to summon another legendary effort. Far harder to do. In short, Duran had to be perfect to beat Leonard. Leonard just needed to be in shape and focused to beat Duran

Do you seriously believe that he put on 50 pounds in two months after the first fight?

In the 30 fo 30 documentary Duran said stomach cramps...in the Hands of stone movie it was weight loss

Bob Arum visited Duran in Panama and said there were cases of Dom Perigon champagne and filet mignon around Durans pool and a hundred people. Duran came waddling out of his house and Arum said he was well over 190. That's why Arcel wanted the fight postponed. He didn't have enough time to recover from his drunkfest
