When people talk about this Duran Leonard fight they make it out as if Leonard dominated but it was an even fight up to the point and even thought Wikipedia isn't the best source it has that the judges had Duran ahead on the cards, anyone know if that's true?

Well he was losing in the judges scorecards but only by a point or two so it really was close.

Duran got tired of Leonard's clowning, which of course was unsportsmanlike. When he ended the fight he said he wasn't fighting anymore with this "payaso" (clown).

About the alleged "No Mas" he has said, "I never said 'no mas.' "How could (television broadcaster) Howard Cosell hear what I was saying? He was on the other side of the ring."

He did quit though which is why it was called "No mas". Whether it was close or not Duran was the one unsportsmanlike when he turned his back like that and decided he had enough.

He was being humiliated, Leonard was rubbing it in, and he couldn't bear it. Quitting in that circumstance may be in poor form, but is not unsportsmanlike.

The question about the scorecards is a good one. I just looked at the Wikipedia article. It says Duran was ahead, and cites to a Sports Illustrated article. But looking at the SI article, I see it tells you everything Duran had for lunch that day, but it says nothing about judges scores. :huh

Boxrec reports these scores, with Duran ahead, unless I'm misunderstandiing who they've got first.

    Mike Jacobs 68 - 66
    Jean Deswert 68 - 66
    James Brimmell 67 - 66

That's my point when I said unsportsmanlike. If he was leading he shouldn't have done that and kept going. He's a professional and champion with 73 fights, why would he get frustrated and decide to give up the entire fight because his opponent was clowning and playing mind games. Clearly that was Leonard's plan going in and it worked for him. I don't think he said "no mas" either but no mas pretty much means "No more" as far as I know and that's what he did in there.

    • Duran's purse was withheld by the athletic commission. The day after the fight, Duran was fined $7,500 for his "non-performance" and the rest of his purse was released.
    • Ray Arcel, Duran's trainer: "That's it. I've had it. This is terrible. I've handled thousands of fighters and never had anyone quit on me. I think this guy needs a psychiatrist more than he needs anything else."

That makes sense. I was confused by the order of the names. I think you're right.

I understand your point. And I understand why his trainer and the commission were angry and disappointed in Duran. Fighters are not supposed to quit. But I also understand why Duran lost his cool. Taunting an opponent you are frustrating and beating, as Leonard frequently did, is not sportsmanlike.

Its just the way boxrec does it.

    If look at SRL

The scores are displayed: 68-66 68-66 67. For Duran they do it the opposite way. Whoevers record you are looking at there score will be shown first.

I understand your point too. Guess we'll have to agree and disagree in this case. I personally feel Duran should have been more professional, kept his cool and went all the way. Getting overly frustrated in his case and angry is also understandable but still it's hard to give a pass for a professional veteran like Duran.

Strange for an ATG being witnessed as having no emotional control. Professional fighters should be well versed on controlling their emotions, and the better they are, the better they usually are at keeping their cool. We could all see there's something wrong with Tyson but, can't find an excuse for Duran.
