i guess u missed the part in the documentary where they said they would make duran an offer he couldn't refuse. he made 1 mil in the first fight. leonard made 10mil. the rematch gave duran 8 mil. that was the most he ever made. mike trainer gave duran's management one day to respond or the offer was off the table. duran's manager lead him to believe that he had no choice because his manager signed the contract. duran wanted more time. he had 8 million reasons to try and make it happen. that was leonard and his ppls whole strategy...not to give duran time to get ready. they knew all things being equal...duran was the better fighter. ppl talk about how leonard changed his strategy for the 2nd fight and he boxed...but no one mentions how flat and lifeless roberto looked in the ring. that was all by design and no accident.
i didn't even watch the whole thing because it was apparent to me from the start that he was looking to rewrite history. duran is the greater fighter, period.
let me get this straight duran quit against leonard ,got schooled by benitez, got koed by hearns and lost a UD to hagler and he's the greatest? you mean the greatest at losing to the best of his era.:deal
What you said is pretty much what happened in a nutshell. Duran got paid 1 million in fight one, then with that 1 million, by far the most he had ever made, he goes on a party binge for weeks on end celebrating. Ray Leonard and Mike Trainer both knew Duran was living it up now having come into a million dollars. They tell themselves, "how do you beat Duran?" They come to realize, you dont beat Duran, you let Duran beat himself. Leonard and Trainer than make Duran's people an offer of the 8-10 million (whatever it was) with the condition of the fight date set, and a limited set day to respond yes or no or the offer would be off the table. Duran turn down 8 million when he had never made 1 million previously??? Never understood how Ray Leonard apologist point to Leonard switching gameplans as the reason he beat Duran in New Orleans when Leonard himself has admitted many times that he outsmarted Duran at the negotiationg table by dangling enough money at him that he could'nt say no. Lennox Lewis is a ****ing fat pig right now. But he just came out public and said that if he was offered 100 million, he'd come out of retirement to fight either Klitchko. If you dangle enough money at Lewis, he'll bite and take the money even though he know he is'nt in the best shape to begin a training camp to even think about beating a Klitchko. What has to be understood here is that during this timeframe of Duran fighting Leonard in Montreal and New Orleans, only Heavyweights got paid million dollar purses and thats only very elite Heavyweights like Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes........ I'd be interested to know what Duran's biggest payday was before he fought Leonard. I'd guess it would be around 100 thousand and would'nt be suprised if it were less. My rationale is that the average baseball player salary during that time was less than 150 thousand for a season. Boxers got paid alot less for 1 fight. The rationale that Duran made his own bed and that he should lay on it has to be thought of with the rationale of the enormous ammount of money that he got offered for that Leonard rematch. Duran knew that in a perfect world, he needed more time to prepare for a Leonard rematch, I dont care who you are, a man like Duran that grew up dirt poor, you dont turn down that type of money under any cirmcumstances. Duran being offered 8 million to fight Leonard then, would be equivalent to Marquez being offered 80 million to fight Pacquiao again after he KHTFO! Pacquiao wants a Marquez rematch so bad, you just do what Leonard did with Duran and bankroll it. :deal Only problem for Manny though would be that Marquez is'nt like Duran. Marquez keeps in shape year round, so he unlike Duran would'tn have a problem getting back into shape at a 2 month notice.
so what floyd is a jr.lightweight moving up he would still get flack for losing to a weltwerweight , jr middleweight or middleweight. you guys love making excuses for duran. he is a good fighter but the greatest you guys are on something:deal
You do know he won titles at 154 and 160 after no mas ,and yes your point about Money is right and that's why I rank him as one of the best ever.
Son of Gaul , is on the money with his message if you watch first fight and listen close Ang Dundee is yelling to Ray Stay there Stay there, cause out on the end of Durans hands is when he was being hurt the most, staying close was only option , Leonard tough SOB. Duran was to good that night 1st go round.
Duran would hang Mayweather in his trophy case , Leonard Hearns Hagler all do the same Roberto in his prime went 15 standing on his head. Heavy weights used to stop workouts just to watch him hit heavy bag at glea gym, May has good D but Duran played defense and offense together ( he'd give angles cut off ring knock May out )
noob he had over 60 fights just at 135 yes the 6 foot 3 Hearns KO'd the 5 foot 7 Duran and yes, one of the top 3 middleweights ever beat him over 15 rounds he was 74-1 with 54 KOs when he took Leonards "0" and jumped 2 divisions to do it. yes , overall he still had the better career.....than all of them :deal
74-1. there aren't too many in history with runs like that. let's not forget he won a title at 160 at age 38 against the the best title holder at the time. they don't make them like duran anymore.
Duran could have said no -- he's the champion, he could have let the deadline pass and say, 'You want the rematch, here are my terms.' If Leonard didn't take it, there was big money to be made against Hearns or someone else. Just because they made an offer with a deadline didn't mean they wouldn't come back to the negotiating table if Duran let the deadline pass. He could easily have banked another $1 million payday against Cuevas or someone else at that moment, or probaly half a million against a nobody just to mark time, while waiting for Leonard to come around. What was Leonard going to do, retire?
