http://www.thesweetscience.com/news/articles/12-articles/310-no-mas-my-version Interesting story from a guy who was on the inside during and in inbetween the two Duran-Leonard bouts. A lot of interesting stories from Leonard's camp, Duran's getting the weight off, Freddie Brown's views etc. Lots of stuff went on surrounding these two fights. The best bit for me is when Duran clocks the reporters assailant with a single right cross and puts him to sleep.
Randy Gordon has a vivid imagination. Be skeptical of nonfiction pieces that directly quote decades-old conversations, that have the author promoting himself as a main player who was "there" a little too much, and that are rife with melodrama and worn-out cliches.
Is there anything else he has written that would lead you to suggest this, or are you just acting on a hunch?
Have read the story about where Duran clocks the reporter's assailant before from another source. Very likely it's true.
It is likely that he was around most of the events surrounding the bouts. He was Bert Sugar's number 2 when Sugar ran Ring Magazine. He is responsible for the iconic image of Hearns dressed as a 40s gangster on ring magazine. He has told stories of him meeting Sonny Liston as a kid, Jack Demspey and a whole load of other fighters, so he has been around. But, who knows?
Sounds like Duran fancied some steak and orange juice. My own suspicions on what happened that fight is that it was a bit less innocent. The ending of that fight smells real bad.
