If you don't agree Marquez was a small blown out ww i don't know what to say. People gave Floyd credit for taking and easily beating Mosley. People thought the DLH fight against Pacquiao was a joke. WHat joke? DLH was CHERRYPICKING Pacquiao and using the #1 p4p status to justify that fight! People thought that Hatton WAS the man at JWW. ANd that would be a much closer fight than DLH. In fighting Cotto, people were saying that Pacquiao was this time facing a REAL tough WW. See how its easy to use the word "people said" and put everybody in the same bag?
I know Michael Wilbon of 'PTI' was one of whom that referred to Floyd as a coward and he's also of African American descent. I'm not aware of any other ESPN commentators who are of other ethnic backgrounds that have called Floyd a coward which could possibly bring validity to your race claims. Please reference who you speak of. And, for the record, I believe that Floyd isn't a coward but rather a egocentric narcissist who demands the spotlight on his terms.
Wow, that's really over the top. Why do you think Hamed and Malignaggi had so many detractors? They were too black? Instead of reaching for theories on racial biases, how about acknowledging the obvious fact that the general public tends to dislike people who act like twats. When Paulie stepped up against Cotto and got his face smashed in but made it to the final bell, he won a lot of people over. His gum flapping was still annoying, but people recognized that he had real heart. When Naz faced off against MAB he was humiliated and disappeared much to the delight of his haters. In the movie, "Back to the Future," do you think there were a lot of people that gravitated to and cheered for Biff (the bully)? He was white. His character was also meant for the audience to reject and root against him. If you act like a dick, the majority of the public isn't going to like you regardless of what color your skin is. I don't agree with calling Floyd a coward because I think his reasons for not wanting to fight Manny aren't due to cowardice. Floyd is a businessman and he knows his "0" is crucial to his financial success. Any loss and his earning power would be severely diminished. Why risk that financial loss on any fight that he wasn't almost certain to win? It only looks like cowardice because of the trash he has spewed only to back down from the fight. Floyd has certainly embarrassed himself because his actions give the appearance of being scared to fight. However, I have no doubt that Floyd would be happy to fight Manny if he wasn't protecting an undefeated record. I don't believe he is afraid of what Manny could do to him in the ring, rather it's the financial risk that he is not willing to take. If I decline to bet $50K on one hand of blackjack, it is not due to cowardice. It is simply a financial risk I am not willing to take.
Dude, again, I don't write the theories of social science, it makes no sense to take exception with me, all I would say is do your own research. Look at the the science of racism and sports, view the science of perception of minorities and the whys and hows, look at the science in terms of symbolic racism and othering, I mean the information is there for anyone to see, if you are inclined to look. I'm not saying that everyone who takes exception to PBF, his actions, or his moral code are racists, but to ignore that it does play a role in the overall public perception would be ignoring establish socialogical theory and research. This phenomenon isn't new and it doesn't apply to Floyd only, it's a much bigger issue than that.
This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected So either I've stolen the family pics of a random white guy, or you are a complete dumbass, I'm fairly certain we all know which of these are true. I wish I had some of the "owned" pictures because I would insert one of those two, you silly stupid ****.
I'm taking exception with your comments because you are ignoring the most obvious factor and focusing on a much less significant one. Sure, there are bound to be some folks out there that pledge allegiance to the Klan and look at Floyd as just a high profile n****r. Are they the majority? I pointed out two non-black fighters that had legions of detractors. These guys were disliked because they talked a lot of smack and people wanted to see them tested so as to back up their words. Do you see any similarities with what the public is demanding of Floyd? FMJ talks crazy **** but takes easy fights. Good on him. That's smart business. Unfortunately, this won't win him many fans in the general public.
I won't say there's *no* impact, but the world's most popular athletes have been, virtually without exception, black. I think where racism comes into play isn't so much individual boxers as it is the general flight from boxing to MMA, which is seen as more "white friendly", the same way the NBA lost much of its mainstream popularity when it became dominated by the hip-hop (read: black) culture. I think that's where you'll find your evidence of "racism", so to speak. Of the people who hate Floyd, 75% of them hate him because he's an *******, 10% hate him because he throws hip-hop (read: black) culture in our faces, 10% hate him because he beat their favorite boxers (DLH, Hatton, Mexicans, etc.)., and only a tiny percent of the remaining group just out and out hate him because they want a black man to fail.
Well and you actually hit on the point, which is that a black athlete will be accepted into mainstream culture and uplifted into "super stardom" and beyond if he's "white" enough ie Tiger Woods. Again it's not an every athlete, every case, but there is a large faction of mainstream "consumers" who don't like the hip hop culture (read: black) being shoved in their face. While they mask their disdain with other "reasons" it still comes back to how he wears his pants, the music he listens to, this perception that if I have braids, gold teeth, and listen to rap music that I'm a criminal regardless of my actions and what I'm actually about. Now I don't say that to imply that all that disagree with Floyd are this way, but there is a faction of people who are this way and it would be shortsided to dismiss it as a non factor, is all I'm saying.
I like Floyd as my avatar & custom title suggests but the only thing I really don't like about him is that past 135 he never seems really eager to fight the best guys out there. I can't blame him because people always do & always will make excuses for the guys he beats. I still give him props for beating guys like Judah, DLH, and of course Mosley.
This is the second time you've mentioned the need for a black athlete to act "white" enough in order to be accepted by the mainstream. Are you suggesting that Floyd's shitty personality is due to the color of his skin? Is being a twat and disrespecting people a trait of "blackness" according to you? People that act like dicks will be universally disliked regardless of skin color. Cowardice has never been a character trait that was prized by any culture. Talking **** and then backing down from a challenge gives the impression of cowardice (although I think it's just a business decision). Why keep pointing out tertiary issues instead of acknowledging the obvious one?
Irregardless of the color of Mayweather it's what coming out of his big mouth which is irritating. He will be forever boastful. Maybe that's what he learned from his parents or school. Boastful = cool :tired Traces of HUMILITY is nowhere to be found!
Agree with this. Calzaghe got a ton of hate in his day, and you are crossing the borders of hypocrisy by giving him **** in a post that was intended to defend a similar type of fighter. I agree with all the rest though. The lack of credit he receives is nothing short of outrageous, especially on the forums. He shouldn't have to jump into fight negotiations two months after his last bout, and just because he doesn't want to discuss a Pac fight right now doesn't mean he's ducking him. I'm still convinced they'll get it done in 2011. People are just so goddam impatient. Beating Pacquaio convincingly would silence half his haters I believe.
